out of Windage-scope alignment ?? need help
« on: March 09, 2005, 11:15:52 AM »
I just set up my 243 Nef for my son and tried to bore sight the scope and found that I am almost out of windage adjustment. It is a Banner varmit scope. I have millet rings on it. How can I correct this? Is it the rings or the mounting base or what??? I just got it back from NEF to have the barrel worked on and it took 5 weeks so I would rather not have that as an option. I maybe have 5 clicks left before it ends bring the cross hairs to the left. I am thinking of trying other rings or bending the current ones.
Thank for you help.

:D, Welcome aboard turk1. Good to have you here. Which model are the rings? I use the Millet Angle Locs and they are great. I have them on my H&R's and have never had a problem. Do not try to "bend" the rings. Are they the "Angle Loc" rings? If so there is adjustment in the rings themselves to roughly center the crosshairs prior to scope final adjustment. If they are Angle Locs I suggest centering your scope adjustment for windage, bore sighting your rifle/scope for windage using the angle loc feature. secure your scope and head off to the range for final adjustment.. Easy...Any questions or problems just shout....<><....

If you want to see if the rings are at fault try rotating the rings on the scope rail 180 degrees and see if the porblem then goes from one side of the target to the other. If so the rings might be able to be adjusted (if they are adjustable rings). It might be a problem with the scope also. If any concerns or unanswered questions let me know and perhaps we can converse over the phone and try to get this problem squared away....Good Luck and don't worry, everything is "fixable"

Junk those dumb millet rings and buy you some Burris Signature Zee rings and a set of offset inserts. Just follow the directions packed with the offset inserts if you find you don't have enough adjustment after installing the Burris Rings. Your scope will love you for it.

GB's right, those Burris rings might work also, although I doubt they are any smarter than Millet rings. They do however require those extra offset inserts though if you need them, but as I said, they should work also. Extra things to fiddle with and lose though. Each of the rings should work as long as you know how to set them up and use them.  I have heard good things about Leupold rings also. I have had great luck with all my Millet Angle Locs so I stay with them, and there are no extra parts to use or lose, simple and strong, hold their adjustment and position, whats not to like? They even look good, a quality product for a good price.
Best of Luck, and choose the one that suits you the best....<><....

One of the problems with the angle-loks is they can easily damage a scope if they aren't aligned properly and then lapped.

The only proper way to use them safely is with a ring alignment tool that is mounted in each ring, then the ends of the tool are lined up at their center points using the lateral adjustment in the clamps.

The second step with Milletts or any other regular ring is to properly lap the rings so they provide a good bed for the scope so the rings don't damage the scope and to provide as much contact between ring and scope.

The Burris Signature Zees don't need all that work to get the same results, a safe bed for the scope in the rings.

You've all seen scopes for sale that indicate the scope has "ring marks" in the description....well, those ring marks reduce a scopes value, if it's a cheap scope, no loss, but any scope I own is worth maintaining it's value so I can sell it for closer to what I paid for it should I ever choose to.....won't happen if it's got ring marks in it....just go to Ebay and take a look at postings there and watch what scopes with no marks on them go for.

I have no doubt that a lot of scopes that shooters have blamed for being inaccurate or a failure were the owner's ignorant mounting procedures that damage the scope's internals without them having a clue.

The Signature Zee rings cost a bit more, but they are reuasable and aren't that much more compared to the value they offer.

They're easy to mount if you have any dexterity at all and they have excellent instructions for mounting. The offset inserts are a pleasure to use if you have a misaligned base, barrel or offset bore which I have had happen on one of my HandiRifles and I've seen it happen on RFC, AR and PM enough to know it does happen and they can be a lifesaver.

I've seen the Milletts praised and I've seen them cussed, they are cast and have a bad habit of breaking, Millett has a great customer NO service department from a lot of posts I've read at AR and PM.

Burris on the hand has excellent customer service, I buy Sig Zees 4 to 6 pairs at a time and got one set that one of the base clamps had no relief cut it so it wouldn't tighten on the base. Took a pic, emailed it to Burris CS with an explanation, they sent me a whole new set within a week, no questions asked....

I went out this afternoon and it was right on with my bore sighting just alittle high. Within about 8 shots and moving the scope crosshairs just alittle at a time I was shooting sub inch groups with 80 Winchester Wally World ammo 243.  Cast Closed...Thanks again  Turk1

Glad we could be of help turk1, and don't be a stranger, since you have been here a few times you are now part of our big, happy, extended family. Heck, why don't you have turk jr. log in and visit, after all he has that nice accurate .243 to shoot now. This is kept a nice family place by that gruff but kindly old scudder GB hisself, so you don't have to worry about your kids or wife visiting, unless she finds out about the new Handi you are planning to buy or or just snuck into the house ( :-D ). Come often and stay late, it's a great place to be!!!!....<><....

Quickdtoo,
That is exactly how the millet rings are to be install. Excellent factual response.
Millet rings may not be the best, but they provide another level of adjustment that solids don't. I have found them to be fine rings.

Most scopes are factory set at the middle of there adjustment so if bore sighting is way off yonder, then the millet rings can be adjusted. Pretty good set-up I think. With the NEF rifles the scope bases are rounded to fit the barrel so it isn't likely that the mount is out of line with the bore. Other rifles are a bit more likely to have this problem, which is another reason the affordable Handi rifle is user friendly.
