Back to the Mannlicher-style forearm....
« on: March 10, 2005, 10:15:35 AM »
Just got my Mannlicher-style forearm in the mail today.  First off, I was impressed...nice taper and think it would be pretty easy to put an end cap on it.  To get an idea how it would look, I put it on my 26" barrel, camo laminate, .280 Handi.  Besides looking STUPID with the 26" barrel and camo...I saw lots of potential.  The base of the forearm would need a little sanding to properly fit, but it would definately work if I had a 22" barrel.  My question is, is there a 22" handi that this forearm wouldn't fit if you did a little sanding?

Thanks,

Jim

The heavy contour of the 45-70 fits great, the other lighter contours would just have a little more space in the barrel channel at the muzzle end. The taper of my .30-30 barrel is considerable in comparison to the heavier barrel of the 45-70 and 357 and looks a bit odd, of course that could have to do with the lack of a sight on the lighter .30-30 muzzle. And you're right about the looks on a 26" barrel, tried it on my .280 rem, yuck! Don't know if you saw my post on it, or not, but if you have a front sight on the barrel, in order to install the barrel band, the sight must be removed and of course the barrel band must be removed to swap barrels. The addition of the end cap would eliminate that issue, although mine looks great without either.

DES, you got me thinking, when I ordered my Mannlicher forearm they said it would fit from 12 gauge down. I got mine a week or so ago and it has been sitting on my 45-70 barrel which is not on a receiver. The 45/70 barrel is 22" long and the forearm looks wonderful on it. I just took it off the 45-70 and put it on one of my 24" 12 gauge barrels, one from my tracker II which is not on a reciever now since I prefer my smootbore barrel. The Mannlicher forearm looks great on the 24" 12 gauge and fits perfectly, no sanding needed buddy unless your going to try to put it on a 12 gauge Ultra Slugger or a 10 gauge....<><....

P.S. Quick and others, no problem installing the barrel band on any barrel with a front sight that is 24" long or longer, It just slides on slick with no problem. On my 22" 45-70 barrel with a front sight I just install the forearm, hook the barrel band over the top of the front sight, gently squeeze the barrel band on the sides to slightly elongate it and it slips right on, easy-peazy, and it comes off just as easily with the front sight still on the barrel, no need to remove it at all ....<><....

Hmm, my front sight must be taller, longer, mounted differently or something  cuz there's no way to slip it over and around the muzzle.....I tried.  :x .....must be some more differences in the changes that H&R has made over the years.

How are those front sights attached on the Handis?

My 45-70s both have a single hole tapped in the barrel, the older one has a 3 or 4x40?, not sure exactly about the size, it's much smaller than the new one that has a 6x48 hole in it.
