Help!! looking for a holographic sight for my Ruger SBHH
« on: March 10, 2005, 03:02:04 PM »
i am looking to get a holo sight for my ruger sbhh. it is scope now but i rarely ever get a standing still shot at a animal(i hunt public land    ). they seem like they would work really well on walking deer! i have never used a sight like it before and i would like some opinions on the ones that work for you guys. here are my options so far. bushnell, osprey, atn ultra. has anyone used any of these and how did they hold up? is the 44 to much for the sight?

ATN is junk. The ATN I purchased jumps to a different recticle with every shot. I've emailed ATN oodles of times with no response what-so-ever.

In my opinion Bushnell is the only way to go. They are proven to handle recoil from big guns.

Be Safe,
Scott

I'm with Scott on this ATN is junk. I currently have a Bushnell, Eotech, and a Nikon mounted, on a .411JDJ 12 inch Contender, a S/W 657, and a .41GNR#2 14 inch Contender. Haven't had a bit of trouble with any of them. BTY the .411JDJ which has the Bushnell is a full length .444Marlin necked to .41 caliber. It is a real hand full. The Bushnell has not missed a beat.
Love those .41s'

Like TScottO my ATN jumps to a different sight each time that I pull the trigger, and that is with it mounted on a .22 Mark II Ruger.  My Bushnell (Old long model) is now on the way in for repair.  It would not turn on the last time I took it to the field.  It did take a few hundred rounds of .44 mag in a ten inch contender before giving up though.  I've used Red Dots on my 12 ga turkey barrels for several years (they cost my 1/4 as much) and have never had one go bad.  Until I start hearing better I'm sticking with the Dots.

Bushnell and Eotech are good products...Bushnell has a new low profile Holosight that you may want to check out.  Looks pretty nice.

8) I have had good luck with the Tasco Pro Point, Millett Red Dot, Leupold-Gilmore, and J.Point red dot sights on everything from .22 LR through 45/70.  The Trijicon Reflex is also great, as you can use the 12" triangle reticle as a rangefinder.  Since it is not battery powered, you can use it in the few places where "electronic sights" are prohibited.

Just received a Bushnell Holosight last week, have it on a 375 Win.
Put about a box and a half of loads thru it. I really do like it, seems to be just the thing for thick cover, early and late moving game at the shorter ranges.
Bushnell has a very low profile, I believe the "XLP". but all of the places I tried were backordered for 8 to 10 weeks and as usual  I needed instant gratification. I bjought the 52-0021 which is lower profile than the 51-0021.
Before purchasing I was unable to find any first hand info.
I bought from SWFA.

You may want to check into mounting the sight before buying.  My bushnell will only work with weaver type base.  You would have to buy the weaver conversion rings.  I have an ultra dot on my redhawk and am very happy with it for under 50 yard shooting.

Ahh...Good point Brian...I have a red dot on my Ruger SBHH and I had to purchase an aftermarket rail to mount the red dot as I could not use the Ruger supplied rings...I opted for a Weigand Scope Mount.  It is a no drill and tap model that is rock solid...Check it out.  It ran $49.95 from JackWeigand.com and the shipping was free.

8) Burris also makes a "Ruger to Weaver" adapter base that is two piece.  I have Jack Weigand's mounts and rings on a 629 Classic DX, a .308 Lone Eagle and on an RPM-XL 45/70 (use 4 rings).  As a previous poster noted "rock solid" in all three instances.  Check out his rings, they are more narrow than most, which enables you to add an additional ring in a tight place for increased scope tube stability.  I have a four ring setup on all three of the aforementioned guns, and use Dymo label tape inside the rings for a no slip cushion.  He has a discount for multiple ring setups.  Nice fellow to deal with, and he will promptly and courteously answer all of your questions via e-mail.  Good luck.
