Author Topic: 20 gauge - 30-30 Handi gun kit (Read 1223 times)

I have never had a Handi gun. Have bought from a old neighbor a
Stainless steel Handi gun - 20 gauge - 3 inch modified choke barrel and
a 30-30 barrel with a 3x9 Simmons Deerfield scope on it. Gun has a
black case for the barrels and stock. Gave $ 150.00 for it. Bought it mainly for the shotgun side as a barn gun.

Is the gun worth what I paid ?

How accurate is the 30-30 side of this set up?

My .30-30 shoots 1½" groups at 100yds with the 150gr rem core-lokts, and most everyone that shoots the .30-30 handis love em. $150 isn't a bad price for that package.

I live close to Johnstown, Pa. Southcentral Pa, about 25
miles north of Somerset 80 miles east of Pittsburgh. Where

Coalminer7, It's a great gun and that's a good price you got it for. If you really wanted it mostly for the shotgun to use as a barn gun I would love to buy the 30-30 barrel from you, What would you want for it?....<><.... :grin:
By the way, my wifes from McKeesport...a lot of deer and turkeys out PA way...

I've an H&R 258, 30-30 and 20 gauge, electroless not stainless made in 82. I've paid a king ransom for it without any regret now.
I've just bought a new scope and i sight-it in today. I shot my "worst bullets", reject from a weighing segregation after casting, as i want to keep the goodies for more serious action.
The last 20 of 28. 5 shots groups at 50 yards, the inner circle is one inch.

Both barrels are factory fitted to your frame and make a nice package. You could have a "barn gun" and something more funny. With some more bucks, you could buy a Choate stock and your 30-30 will look like :

Now there is a Weaver KT15 instead of a meopta 7x50.

Would like to shoot it first, if it doesn't work out I will
contact you about a possible sale. Your wife is from McKeesport, Johnstown is about 80 miles east. Deer aren't are numerous as they
once where in certain area's. Pa Game Comm has different thoughts
and claims people will not hunt hard. Go to Pa hunting.com and read
many different thoughts on Dr. Alt's program and what it has done. The
program has good and bad idea's depending if you hunt private or public ground.

Pascalp, that's some fine shooting and some fine cast bullet loads. Mind sharing the details of the loads?

I have an electroless 258 kit. too. Mine's 20 gauge/ .357 Max. It was supposed to be that from the factory but somehow a Mag got into a Max box so I fixed the mistake.

I dunno why electroless seems to have disappeared. It's attractive and durable. Cheap, too. At the time I got mine, there was only a $10 difference between blued and electroless.

OK Coalminer, and thanks. I have hunted there with my brother in law who used to belong to Shaners gun club. We also hunted up in Clearfield County on Clearfield Mountain. That was years ago but it sure was great then. Take your time and I'm here when ever you decide something....<><.... :grin:

Coalminer. I know the Somerset area pretty well. My Buddy and I spend Saturdays scouring Pa. gunshops and gunshows. There are also some good roads and scenic areas for cycle riding. Been to Horseshoe curve many times. Jennerstown Raceway once. Once found a pizza parlor east of Pittsburgh that offered an 18" pizza and a six-pack of Iron City for $20. Nice area. We are from central Maryland, Frederick area.

Next time you are in Somerset, Go to Hoover's Outfitting
in Rockwood (814-926-3051). He has the best and I mean the best prices on guns - scopes i have ever and I mean EVER found. No mater what i want his prices beat Grices, Juniata Trading, Hornicks hands down.

One other note guys, this electroless finish, how do you clean tarnish
rust spots from it??

Coalminer. I know Hoover's very well. Its the first place we visit when we head to the area. First time we visited was during the winter with snow on the ground. Was a bit fun getting up the driveway. I usually get some reloading supplies. He has a great selection of bulk new brass. My buddy bought a Remington Mod 11 from him sometime ago. Nice people there. Juniata Trading Post has a nice selection of Handi's. I don't always have the cash and his price is higher for using a credit card in addition to the background check fee and taxes.

Grice's is about the only good place to shop near me. I'm 33 miles east of him. He does have just about everything, but always seems to be out of .458 bullets. Used to haul Joy dogfood down through Somerset to Berlin and Holsopil(SP), and up to Strongstown. Nice country. I'm up on the Scotia Barrens, myself. Lot of controversy about deer management going on; but I think some(maybe a lot) of it is economic. I've killed two 10 pointers in the last two years(first time I've ever done that), but yeah the population is down. That's good to me, since there were just too MANY damned deer around this area(Centre County) anyway. They were doing a lot of damage both crop and to the woods environment. While the days of just walking into the woods and popping something in the first half hour seem to be over( as of right now...best I can see). The deer population is getting right. Deer eat the same thing as a lot of other critters, and seems there might be a better balance in the woods now. Off topic, I know. I'll stop now.

If you go to Grices also go to Bobs Army Navy Store also,
it is about 4 blocks down the street. Neat pace, love the old wood floor.
Check prices at both before buying

Yea this deer thing will kinda wild till they decide the doe
allocations for the year. How are your coyotes?? Big article on trapping
in Somerset County with big treble hooks in meat tied to a tree. Let
somebody's pet lab get their tongue ripped out and you watch the sparks
fly then. We as deer predators can control some of this on our own, just
because you buy 10 doe tags doesn't mean you have to shoot 10 deer. I
hunt with my 2 daughters age 13 and 16 and personally I could care less
if I shoot another when they are with me. The joy I get from them getting
is something I will take to my grave.

Coalminer. Thanks again for the info. Spoke to my buddy last night and he's going along with me. I was able to locate them in Clearfield. Its a long way. We're about 3 hours from Altoona, adding refreshment stops. So I figure about 4 hrs total. But, any opportunity to get up to that area is worth the drive especially when scouting for a new Handi.

About once a year we do the "State College Loop" on the motors. Home to Harrisburg to Williamsport to State College to Bedford then back home. Long day, awesome ride.

Coalminer: I frequently see Rem 788's at gun shows. Not in great numbers, but one or two usually. Most shows I attend are in PA. There are not that many shows in MD. and the prices are generally higher than in PA. When I do see 788's, they are usually priced in the $350.00 - $400.00 range. I see them in MD gunshops from time to time, but they can be even higher. The 788 is a fine gun. My father has had a .222 788 since the mid 70's and I would love to have one myself but I'm having some trouble swallowing the current prices. Especially when I see new Savages with scopes for the same money.

My Handi's:

.30-30
.30-06
.44 Mag
.45-70

And several H&R/NEF shotguns

I'm on the prowl for a 7mm and have recieved lots of great advice and info from this site about them. Currenly I'm leaning toward a .280, but I always keep an eye open for a deal, regardless of caliber.

I purchased my .223 to have a long range caliber that was easy on the shoulder and cheap to shoot. You probably wouldn't be dis-appointed and it would be a good caliber to add to the Handi family.

I have 2 - .280's , a .280 rem. mnt rifle and a 7600 pump
they are great. I use IMR 4350 / 50.0 grs/ and 154 horandy or Nosler
BT. Get 5 shots in a quarter. In my opinion it is the ultimate caliber for what we hunt. I want a 788, but agree with you they are not worth the money they are bringing
