Single Shot Rifle Recommendations
« on: March 12, 2005, 12:49:29 AM »
Looking at getting a single shot rifle (maybe an Encore), but love the looks of the Ruger #1. Don't really want to buy a Ruger, never been real happy with how they shoot. Looking for a .308 Win or .300 Win Mag. Any recommendations for a similar style to the #1?

Also concidering a high-wall syle gun too.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences with the No1. I haven’t had any more problems with No1s than I’ve had with other kinds of factory rifles.  I have some very accurate No1s and I have a few accurate Encore barrels. I have some inaccurate Encore barrels but I don’t own an inaccurate No1.

If you want something along the lines of a No1 try  a Dakota single shot

I have a Ruger #1 in 45-70 and it is a tack driver. I also had a Ruger #1 in 220 Swift and it also shot like a dream. I have Encore's as well, 444 Marlin, 300 Win Mag and 22-250, they also shoot well. I could no decide which on I liked more, so I got both.  :D

I've got a Number 1 that I just took to the shop today to have the trigger lightened. I love it, and Wouldn't hesitate to get another when the funds get right. I also have two of the NEF'S one in 30/30 and the other in .270. Both have been to the shop for trigger work, and both are tack drivers.

Thanks for all the advice, it's making me do a lot more research. Like the Dakotas but too pricey for me.

Several years ago I bought two new #1's and sold them at a loss because they wouldn't shoot well.  Always did like the looks of them, but won't own an inaccurate gun.
Then, just last year I traded into two more of them with the intention of not keeping them. One is a factory 218Bee the other a rebarrel in 17/222.  Both of them are staying.  Both shoot great.  What's the difference?  Who knows?

There are 4 Ruger No. 1's in our house(2 .22 Hornets(one for the wife and one for me), 1 .25-06 and 1 .450 Marlin) at this time and more to come because they shoot so well.  If it were me I would go with the Ruger No. 1.  Most times they shoot better than the person doing the shooting.  Lawdog

I've an "ancient" Ruger #1 Standard in 6MM Remington(ser # 0608) and two NEF's; one in 45/70 and one in 22 Hornet.  All three shoot into less than an inch.  All have killed a lot of game with one shot if I did my part(which I mostly did).  Much as I've always wanted a #1 in 45/70, my NEF shoots so well and is such a joy to carry, that I invested some money in a Fiddleback stock from Gunstocks INC, and a steel spacer/triggerguard.  Total cost of the rifle now(amortized over 14 years....when I originally bought it) about $440.  Looks like it belongs in the woods; especially in these eastern mountains where the Pennsylvania Rifle was born.  I"ll settle for that, I reckon.  Nope, this old MAC won't let me post photo's here, or I would have back at the H&R forum.

Not similar to the #1, but a single shot, and very accurate (not to mention inexpensive) the H&R SB2-808 Ultra Rifle in .308.

I've got 2 #1's that I bought in the 70's (.270 &7mm mag) both shoot  great but the 270 shoots 3 shots touching at 100 yards if I do my part. I'd give the #1 another try maybe you'll luck out. rugerman

My favorite single shot is my TCR.  Most accurate gun I've ever shot, and is just a sweet shooting firearm.  I have multiple barrels for it and can take anything in North Americia.  The only problem is that TC had a fire several years back and they no longer have any spare parts, not any of the tooling  to make any.  My NEF 30-06 is second, over my Encore.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I posted earlier that I had a Ruger#1B. Well, my birthday is coming up next week, and my wife just let me walk into the gunshop and get another, in 7mm  Remington mag!

"Best" single-shot?
« Reply #14 on: March 28, 2005, 04:01:28 AM »
What do you want to use your rifle for?

If you are looking for a hunting rifle, the Ruger #1 is hard to beat at the price. I've found that the main variable with Rugers is the barrel. Get one with a good barrel and it will SHOOT. Get one with a mediocre barrel and it won't. Here's the good news... get one with a mediocre barrel that doesn't shoot and Ruger will replace the barrel with a good one (the repair department will inspect the new barrel and test-fire the gun to ensure the replacement is a good barrel) for free.

My favorite 'commercial' single-shot is the new Browning/Winchester 1885 in all its variants. Every one I've owned shoots great, they have a great 'feel' to the action, and in my opinion the American-style 'High Wall' is more attractive than the British-style Ruger and Dakota (although the Dakota is one nice-looking, fine-shooting rifle if you are looking to spend that much). Of course, I really like the original High Wall design but buying a good one is spendy. In reality, the repro High Walls, etc., are best-suited for target, sport, and varmint shooting for most people since they are somewhat more susceptible to inadvertant discharge than modern single-shots with safeties.

If you want versatility and performance at a good price, the T/C Contender and Encore rifles are worth looking at. My only gripe with the Contenders is that the action can be a bear to open, and with lighter barrels they are butt-heavy (and thus not steady for offhand shooting). People also brag up the NEF and H&R single-shots, and they do offer great performance at their price point.

NEFs
« Reply #15 on: April 01, 2005, 02:20:30 PM »
I would watch buying a NEF in a rimless caliber.  Had one in 45-70 and sent my receiver off for 3 barrels; a 308, 223 and 243.  45-70 never had a problem, the others consisently stuck in the chamber after firing, no matter what I did.  Sold it after 6 months of frustration.

Picked up a Martini in 45-70 and bolt guns in the other calibers and am a lot happier...

Failures to eject are easily fixed with a good chamber polishing, I haven't had any that weren't my fault for not keeping the chamber clean and dry and I'd like to think I have enough rimless H&R rifles to be a good judge of that ....

I have lost track of how many ruger no.1's I have owned from .223-.458 win mag. Only one was really not accurate, probably because the forend screw was touching the barrel. Some need accurizing more than others, but not any more than other types of actions. For choices in single shot Ruger #1 wins by a mile.

I love my H&R's, especially my 7x57, 45-70, 30-30, .357 Mag (shooting .360 DW loads) and .280 Remington in centerfires, my .17 HMR, .22 Mag and .22 LR in rimfires and all my H&R shotguns. I also love to buy H&R's that others have said have "sticky chambers" and just clean and polish them and get a real shooter cheaply that someone else was to prejudiced or to lazy to clean and work on. There is no way a Dakota, Ruger #1 or #2, or a TC can match or even come close to what an H&R single shot offers for accuracy for the money!!!!.
Since I started shooting these fine little guns my Weatherby's, Ithaca SKB's, Remingtons and Winchesters have all stayed in the gun closet!!! (I still shoot my original LC Smiths occasionally)....<><....

Great rifle - but, well thanks. Wish I could tell you that I shot it off hand, w/ one arm tied behind my back, but it was off bags w/ a 2x7-33 VX-II, & all the concentration that I could muster.....

If there is a point here, I guess it is that aside from a defective barrel, #1's have excellent accuracy potential - w/ the right load.

This one groups green box Rem 300 JHP  fairly well, & I bet it would shine w/ any of the high quality, extreme power factory loads (Buffalo Bore, etc.) as well.

Ruger No 1...soon to add Handi-Rifle
« Reply #24 on: September 29, 2005, 03:55:23 AM »
I have an older Ruger No 1 in 243Win that has proven extremely accurate.  3-Shot groups at 100 yards will normally print 1/2".  These are my reloads shooting 85gr BTs over H4350.  I found that both my 243 rifle prefer the midrange bullet weights and "max" powder charges.  The Ruger's stablemate, a Winchester 70, averages around 3/4" under the same conditions.  Asthetically, the Ruger No 1 is a beautiful rifle.

I owned an H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic in 45-70, but foolishly sold it.  It was a great shooter.  Never really sat down and printed it for groupings, but always had great success in popping clays at 125-200yards.  Normally fired the first shot to determine point of impact, then used Kentucky Windage from that point on.

I will soon add an NEF/H&R Handi-Rifle to my safe.  Looking at a 223 and sending it off for a 30-06 barrel too.  From everything I've read, experiened and talked with owners, they are a great no-frills rifle.
