Which would be the better one to have the 500 S&W or the 45/70?

There are a couple previous threads of that topic, use the search function, they shouldn't be hard to find, but it's been a while since they were posted to.

I'd say it depends.  If you want something different or unique, get the 500.  If you want versatility and more power get the 45-70.

Factory loads, (most anyway) the 500 has more power but the old 45-70 can really come alive with reloading.

Take your choice. When you get up that big and generate that many Foot Pounds, it's a matter of preference.....the whole subject gets academic.  The 500 is right expensive to shoot right now with factory stuff....seems prices run from around $31-$47 a box of 20.  Standard 45/70 factory stuff goes around $20 and will handle anything on this continent at 100 yds or so.  'Course the 500 is already maxxed out in factory loads, while the standard factory loads can be considerable improved; as has been stated.  However, how much improvement you need, if any,  depends on your hunting requirements.  I"ve been shooting an NEF 45/70 for 14 years and love it; but I"ll probably end up with a 500 also...just for the heck of it.  I've yet to see published ballistics on it from a rifle barrel, but suspect it will be pretty much side-by-side adequate with the 45/70 for all reasonable purposes within the constraints of the NEF action.  I don't do unreasonable.

Well, a true handiholic would end up with em all anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter what order you get em in, just get em all, sooner or later......  8)

Those new magnum handgun rounds are pretty neat, but I don't think any of them has anything on the .45-70 handi owner with a lee loader.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like the old 40-65 in a handi.  Bet we could push that old BP round to some very interesting levels in the Handi.

Guys, yesterday while at Sportsman's Warehouse in Missoula, Mt, I just couldn't help myself (no I didn't buy one) but I just had to open a box of .50 Action Express

The massive frontal area of the JSP round was massive, and just holding that cartridge you knew you had some hard hitting ammo right there in the palm of your hand.

Now would I ever want one of these......

Only if I could have it like THIS ONE   :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

I already have a 45-70 Or I should say two. I also have a 44 mag Handi. There is no way I need a 500 S&W. But I sure wish they would hurry up and get it on the market. JUST IN CASE. :)
