When I was doing a lot of trap shooting (20,000 to 30,000 per year) I had a pump hooked to a MEC press.  BUT NOT FOR LONG!

The noise was terrible, and if something got caught crossways you couldn't stop the cycle of the pump to correct the problem.  You push the floor pedal and the MEC completed the cycle.  Using arm power, if something got screwed...you stop and correct it and continue.

Had a fella here convert his PW shotshell loader to hydraulic power. He should have installed a bypass though as it jammed and sprung the whole frame. That was about $800.00 in the crapper real quick.

I would not even consider it. I like to feel what is going on, that is why I stick to a single stage press. :D

How about a pneumatic one?  Run it off an air compressor, you could adjust the air pressure so that if it jammed, the ram would just stop.

Air pressure would probably not be a very good idea. I would think it would start building pressure when it met resistance and then it would be likely to slam when it overcame the resistance. Hydraulic would be a lot smoother operation but pretty dangerous. Get digit where it don't belong and your going to lose it. I cant begin to count the number of times I have tried to close a press with my finger between the case mouth and the die. You let go real quick. Do that with some thing hydraulic and you'll ventilate your finger. KN

Correct, air is compressable and hydraulic fluid is not.  Air can "store" energy and release it all at once with disasterous results.  Not a good medium for controllable motive force.

My dad built a air powered can smasher. It will reduce a pop can 4:1 in less than a blink of an eye. Ya make darn sure your fingers are out of the way before hittin the lever! :-D
I know PW now makes a hydraulic system for thier presses, aparently they had a few screwed up by "inventors".
When thinking of a powered ram I have to remember the times when my finger was in the way of the case mouth or decapping pin and even though I was able to back off the lever quickly, it wasn't quick enough!

thanks guys, I do beleive I will stick to manual operation, I am left handed and have lost a finger on my left hand,so if I lose any more on my left, they will be calling me rightey  :)   as for that RCE being pricey,I would say that is a bit of an understatement
