Depends on what load you shoot. I have a Encore 15" w/o brake. Trapdoor loads are not bad but heavy loads are another story. How are you going to use it, if for hunting what are going to do about the blast? It not that much fun shoot paper with because of the shot range due to bullet drop. Guy SE Okla.

.45-70 Recoil

I load a 300 grain jacketed hollowpoint to 1560.  That's as hot as I'm going to shoot my G2.  I know that it can be done hotter, but someone else is going to have to enjoy it as my enjoyment ends beyond that point.  A good shooting glove helps greatly.  I have shot factory 300s and I just don't enjoy it.  If you don't enjoy it, is there really any reason to do it?

I have a 17" with the muzzle brake, okay to shoot with 300 factory loads for hunting. Didn't bother me when I was sighting in a Red Dot scope. Wouldn't want to shoot 25+ rounds a  day though, but I'm 63 with arthritis in my wrist.

I bought a 45/70 barrel before I went Russian boar hunting.  I was pleasantly surprised at how it shoots.  I shot Remington 300 factory loads.  Not bad for recoil.  I loaded up some Hornaday 350 interlocks and shot completely through a 400 lb.  boar at 75 yards.  It was a great one shot kill.  I think that this showed me that you don't have to load it so hot that you can't stand to shoot it.  I like this barrel so much that I don't want to shoot anything else!  I had read so much about the terrible recoil that I shyed away from the barrel.  I'm glad I bought it anyway.  I'm shooting it with the wood grips on a G2.  I wear gloves of course as its winter, but recoil is very manageable.   The recoil is more like a push than a sharp blow with other calibers.

i agree with skeeter, a 45-70 does not have to be loaded hot to make it an effective killer.  :D

Remington factory loads are milder than Winchester.  Don't know about Federal.. Sure surprised me when I finshed the Remingtons and opened up the Winchesters.

Do a search on this topic I think it is asked about 3-4 time a month.I keep my velocities around 1500-1600 fps thats plenty for me.I have loaded it up higher but not enough improvement to justify the extra recoil.

At 1500 to 1600, think of it as a .454 with less pressure!
It'll kill'em.

This thread came at a great time for me, just bought a 14" 45-70 barrel with muzzle tamer from cknight.  I have a couple of questions

1: Has anybody tried loading with accurate 5744?

2: I am thinking of ordering the deaccelerator grips, do they help?

Steve,  Question #1- Yes, with very good results, especially with cast bullets.  It's been a while and the memory is foggy but I'm thinking 300-330gr'ers in the 1400fps range and 405's at about 1200.  I should have some notes hidden around here somewhere.  I'll look!
Question #2- DEFINATELY, I just don't think I'd shoot mine anymore w/o them.  Especially with the muzzle tamer model.  Well, this thread is about recoil...so here I go...I'm gonna stick my foot in it.  Everybody says a muzzle tamer reduces recoil.  I say a muzzle tamer(and here I'm talking about TC's version) CHANGES recoil.  I'd compare it to shooting a Ruger Blackhawk and S & W M29, both in 44Mag.  One jumps up and twists and the other one nails you straight in the palm of your hand.  I have two 45-70's.  One without and one with tamer.  At first I thought the muzzle tamer was the trick, and then I realized what a pounding I was taking in the palm.  Now I really believe I'd rather shoot the one w/o.  My barrel w/o tamer is one of the old 16 1/4"er's.  I've really noticed a difference since arithritis has crept into my hands. Lordy, I've rambled way out'a sight.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  :)
BTW Steve, quit sending all that snow here to the east, I wanna go shoot!!
