70 CFR
« on: March 13, 2005, 09:22:50 AM »
I was in a store today and in the gun display case they had a rifle laying there that said it was a Winchester 70 CFR.  When I got home I went to Winchesters website to see what exactly a 70 CFR was.

I have not been able to find that exact model on the website.  I am guessing that 'CFR' denotes 'Center Fire Rifle', but nothing in the style appears on the website until you get into the extreme weather and super grade models, which are much more expensive.  Anything on the website in a cheaper model does not come in 30-06, as this one was.

It was Stainless with a Black Synthetic stock.  And a sign claims that only 2 were available per store.

Maybe it was CRF and not CFR.   Either way I don't see that model on the website with the rest of the Model 70's.

Is it something new?

Either way, CFR or CRF, a Model 70 .30-06 in Black Synthetic and Stainless isn't available on the website unless you want to spend roughly $2500 or more.

Maybe it's a special run.

I was back in the same store today and got a closer look at that rifle.  It is a CRF Model 70 Stainless Classic.  What threw me off on the Winchester website was that it only appears with sights on the website.  The rifle I saw at the store didn't have sights, but other than that it is a Classic.

The clerk told me that a customer ordered a rifle and the Distributor sent three.  Now they have two more to get rid of.  The clerk also said that the Classic without sights was a special order Winchester filled for that Distributor.

At $607 it was much cheaper than most in the same group and out of my price range.

Below is what the Distributor had about the rifle on his website.
