ATV Tires
« on: March 14, 2005, 09:32:54 AM »
Just looking for poeples oppinions on what is the best all around tire for
1. Trails with big mud holes, rock surfaces, Dirt, roots and gravel
I also ride a bit on pavement getting from trail to trail.  And  snow           as      well.

I ride a 99 honda 450 foreman 4 wheel drive all time so its hell on the front tires.

I need a durable tire that the treads will hold up, especially in the front where there is the most wear.

I also need a good mud tread to keep up with the boys in the mud holes

My girlfriend rides with me so some comfrt is needed.

I am looking into Mud Lights
        27,10,12 front
        27,12,12 back

Bearclaws same sizes as above

Am I on the right track???

Thanks,
Camper

thats a tall order, to find a tire that is good on hard surface and still good in mud holes, pavements etc..  No such tire can do it all well.  Tires will usually excell in one area and not be too good in another.  Now having said that I find a good all around trail tire is the ITP 489 (OEM tire on Polaris Ranger).  There are also some new radials that seem to get good reviews as all around good tires.

I hear good things about the mud lites, so far haven't read or heard much about the bearclaws, although they do look cool.

I realize it is a tall order but thought I would ask just for curiosity sake and to make sure I was not missing anything.  I think I will go with the mud lites because I have heard good stuff about these tires as well!!!

Thanks

Camper, take a look at the Kenda Bear Claws before you decide.  I'm running some right now (2nd set) and they come closer to doing what you want than any of the others you mention.  The Mud Lites are a good tire but due to the soft compound won't last long on pavement or hard pack trails.  I got about 600 miles on the Lites and they were slicks.  Have almost that on the present claws and see little sign of wear.

I can give you some tire names to stay away from but nothing mentioned here so far would be on it.

are the bear claws 6 ply?  Kenda makes a good tire, and the bear claws look good.  I've never tried them out, but was thinking about them for my future tire upgrades.  How heavy are they?

I actually looked at Some bear claws that a buddy just put on his quad.  They looked good He put on 26's and I found that they did not look as aggresive as the mud lites.  I am going for 27's do you know if there is much difference in the depth of treads between the two sizes?  I  have on Delta Excavators presently.  They are 4 ply and have not held up that great.  I put on the 26's and he has 27's and there is a huge difference in the depth of tread.  I will certainly pass on the good info about the bearclaws to my buddy, It will make him feel good that he bout a good tire.  I guess now I have changed my mind and will look into this further!!!

The bear claws are 6 ply

Yep, the Bear Claws are 6 ply as are most mud tires.  As far as weight goes, they are lighter than Swamp Pro's, 589's, 489's and the like.  I don't know the exact weights of all mentioned but do know by feel.  The Excavators are a good mud tire but are very poor on the hardpack trails and even worse on the rocks.  I don't have any but a buddy does.

I am well satisfied with the Wooly Booger look alike that I get through JC Whitney, or Sam's club.  The tread is flat enough that they give a good ride on hard trails, yet aggresive enough for the Chocolate pudding mud.  I use them on a Suzuki 250-4WD, and a Honda 300 4X4.  Just make sure you get the higher ply rating, well worth the extra money.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I run black water tires.on my Foreman. Ride is not too bad. Great in sand and mud.. Wear.. well havent had them long enough to really notice.. 600 miles and no noticeable wear.. No measurment taken. I am sasatifed.. Like any tire.. there are compromises to be made.
