1.5x5 Weaver Grand Slam
« on: March 14, 2005, 05:03:16 PM »
I am going to return a Redfield 3x9 to Simmons Outdoors and get a Weaver Grand Slam 1.5x5 for my 7x57. Are these scopes as rugged as they say? This scope could spend some time on my 45-70. Would the V series be better in 2x7?

The Weaver Grand Slam 1.5x5 will work great on both guns you mentioned. It will hold up to both well.  :D

Redhawk1 are you the same Redhawk that Kudu is always trashing on Accuratereloadin? Those guys sure have an anti non resident hunter attitude.

Yes that is me. I think everyone takes turns on me. I reply to someone making a personal attack on me and then I get slammed by someone else. They are a bunch of anti-non-resident hunter there. I think they want me to leave, but I can be as stubborn as a mule.  :D

The Grand Slam scopes are pretty darn good, both optics wise and durability wise.  The only thing I don't like about them is that they generally have short eye relief.  This won't be much of a problem on a 7x57, but it will be a problem on the hard kicking 45-70.  I'd check and see the eye relief before you buy it.

If I notice the post I always give em my opinion.  What do they care what we pay for a tag anyway? As for eye relief I doubt I will take of the red dot sight on my 45-70 so the scope will stay on the 7x57. My greatest concern is reliability.

I have the GS 1.5x5 mounted on a Marlin 1895M (.450 Marlin) and it has performed flawlessly.  I must admit to it smacking me a few times when I wasn't paying attention though.

If that is your greatest concern, then you generally need not worry.  The GS has an excellent tracking system and they perform great.  Although I would generally buy a Nikon Monarch or Bushnell Elite 4200 over a GS, I probably would buy a GS if it were to be mounted on a lighter kicking rifle because of its short eye relief.
