WHO IS STILL TRAPPING?
« on: March 15, 2005, 05:56:55 AM »
It is still several weeks till ice out here.So I am trying to get everything done before I go on my Beaver Sabatical.
I have gotten several Lure orders from guys in Iowa,so I know they are still chasing beav.
I was just wondering who is still out there trapping and for how much longer?
Steven 49,keep me posted on your ice conditions.Once yours goes ,I know I won't have to much longer to wait.

I'm just getting started over here!! I guess I do most of my beaver trapping in the spring since I have more time. Next week 18-28 is spring break for me and I love it cause all I do is beaver trap!! Last year we got 4 over that week, so I'm looking to up my total!! 3 days left in the countdown.........

Tom, I just sent you a lure order via e-mail, let me know if you got it!!

Tom, just got back from Lake of the Woods.  Still three feet up there lol.  I got a feeling it may be a later start this year.  Been cold the past five or six days single digit lows maybe even below the donut with high teens and low twentys for high should be in the mid to high 30s normally.  Supposed to snow on thurs and fri.  Just got a feeling but you know how it is was 48  10 days ago and probably be again in 6 or 7 days.

Then we are gonna have at it til then I suppose I will have to fish (sigh).

Bill, good catch.Don't you wish you could take more?
We have a limit of 4,the zone runs a mile north of me all the way to canada, our otter population keeps increasing and the entire state should be opened for otter. We will see what happens.

I'm ok with the limit I guess, and think for my area it's a realistic balance between population and harvest. Definately will be otter for years to come. Great time of the year to be out, and a nice way to end the season! This was a fairly deep underpass run, and you can see the swampmaster stands were employed! Great tool.

Hey Ya'll,

Yes, I am still trapping down here in Texas...  Two Hog traps are on line and doing fine.
So far this year I have only caught one Hog. But two horses and a calf have seen the inside of my traps.                                                   Sugarmay and old Red, my saddle mule,
were in the #1 trap each of two consecutive mornings, having stood there all night, they were in a bad mood. Old Red was looking profoundly board and when Sugar said:      "Red did it!"  "She came in here first!"             "Its her fault."
Old Red said:  " Yeah but I didn't kick the trip wire!"
"I ate corn for 15 minutes before you came in and shut the door, you dumb paint!"  "So we had to stand here for 14 hours... all night!!"
"Don't you remember I said watch out for that trip wire."
They are still kinda mad at each other.

Just got back from lake of the woods, still three feet of ice lol.  Set a coiuple traps yesterday Tom.  Wont catch anything there for a week probably but they are there.  Am thinking Monday I can get some out on a couple spring fed creeks and by Wednesday can fire up a little.

Of course all depends on the weather but sounds like a warm up is on the way.

Just got back from the lake again.  Still three feet.  Its tough to ice fish when its 50 degrees and sunny outside.   Got a little sunburned though.

Should be able to hit the beaver tomorrow.   Am hoping to get out fifteen sets.  Should of started today but had to go to the lake and get my snowmobile and things.   Oh yeah had to fish too.

Bill, our season runs till may 15.Ice out in the north country was around april 20th last year.I pulled the last of my traps may 4.
The latest I have taken good beaver was a couple I took during fishing opener, nuisance job may 13.
as soon as the ice starts to go,the beaver are very good, after they spend time in the sun ,they start to break down.I usually trap spring beaver for about 2 weeks after ice out.

Got your lure Tom, I plan on trying it out this week sometime. The weather didn't cooperate last week, so I didn't even get to trap at all over break.

Now I need to find some places to go around school here, but unfortunately my classes are cutting into my trapping time!!

Tbar go north out of Pt on 39 and after a few miles you will see a big swamp on left side.. bvrs had a house next to 39 near fence.  You should be able to set some traps where swamp drains out ( bridge) ... Go further north on 39 and you will see   where  Little Eau Clair, Peplin, and Johnson creek come into Lake DuBay.   All these are good spring bvr creeks to set up.... Good Luck...

RdFx,

I notice every time I drive up north that there is alot of fresh chews around there, but I wasn't sure about being able to trap there or not.

What is the law about trapping roadside ditches?

How far can I go into the swamp and along shore?

Thanks for the tip!!!

TBar get your self a Gazetter  of Wi and  if possible plat book of areas i described.  Most of it is a power company and there are accesses to the water  right along side of private land and you can walk there...  IF you have access to a boat you can hit alot of areas but  wear life jackets and   work with a partner.  Good luck
