30 carbine
« on: March 15, 2005, 08:03:08 AM »
Is anybody shooting a 30 carbine Blackhawk? I have one coming in June. Shot it some the other day, kinda loud with factory, may be load it with a 150 grain gas check and turn down the noise.

I have one and not only is it loud, but a lot of flash.  :D

I am thinking of a 120 grain gas check with wc 820 powder and kind of make it a 32 magnum plus P. I really dont know why I am intrigued by the darn thing but it will be fun. I will bet a 150 grain bullet will tone down the flash and noise.

I have one also. Loudest high pitch crack I've ever experienced. It shoots good, have only shot factory loads thru it.

You can try, but I doubt you can crack the crack!!
Mine did it up to the 165 RCBS sil bullet.

I have loaded up some Lyman cast bullets in the 120 range, and cranked up the speed.  This helped me the most.   If I recall correctly, they are sized .310.

Only problem I have ever had with my gun is cylinder locking up due to high primers or long brass.  I have to trim my brass religiously so I don't have to worry about whether a round will load in it.

Good Luck and enjoy that gun.

Steve   :D

P.S.  If you see an extra cylinder for one, let me know!!

That ear piercing crack seems to be inherant in .30-.32 revolvers.  I shoot the Blackhawk .30 Carbine, 32-20 Buckeye Blackhawk, and several SS .32 H & R's and they all have it.  The Carbine may be the worst, but they are all pretty close.  Even the .32 H & R loaded down some still cracks.  Ear protection is a must.  Huh?  What did you say?  I couldn't hear ya!  Love to shoot'm though.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

I had one but I sold it. I bought it because someone gave me 5,000 rounds of .30 carbine ball ammo. After I bought it I found out it wouldn't shoot G.I. stuff. Only about 1 round in 5 would chamber and function. It kind of defeated the whole reason for getting it.

I have one that I use toned down 32-20 data in, to lessen the noise. I love mine but it's hard to use a cast bullet after full length sizing due to the case taper. The finished round has an hour glass shape and some wind up being difficult to chamber. I haven't played with it for years but have lots of ammo loaded. It's a fun piece to play with.

I've had one for about 3 years now, and it shoots really nice. It is a bit loud, but not that much. Recoil is very light. I've never had a problem with functionability. It's very important that the cases be of correct length because it headspaces on the case mouth like a .45 ACP does. It a really fun gun to shoot, if I can get it away from my wife!  Bill T.
