Red Dot on 870
« on: February 10, 2003, 02:57:06 PM »
I am thinking of putting a Bushnell Trophy red dot on my 870 for turkey and deer. Has anyone done this with their shotgun and how does it work for you?

Terry,

I own an Ithaca 37 with a Red-Dot on top........Think it's the Cats Behind!!!  I like red-dots cause you can keep both eyes open to follow your target and watch the hit.  Can't do that with scopes.  Just remember two things.....Turn it ON before you need it, and turn it off when you're done!  Can't tell you anything about those Bushnell Trophy Red-Dots but those Holographic models are designed after the fighter aircraft "Heads-Up"  display sights.  Sure are cool!  If you want to save some money, and who doesn't, try to find a TASCO Red-dot as they were bought out by Bushnell.  I paid about $100 for mine 3 yrs. ago and you should find one today for about a 1/3 less.
savageT........Have you hugged a '99 lately?

I agree with SavageT, these red dots are the neatest things since sliced bread. I mounted one on my short barreled 870 last year for turkeys and I don't know how I hunted without one. It really does make a difference in being able to keep both eyes open and on the target and with the red dot's being parallax free all you have to do is put the dot on the target  and pull the trigger. The biggest down fall has to be with battery life. I've never had one go dead on me in the field but I replace the battery every season and keep a spare in my vest "just in case" Try one I don't think you'll be disappointed..

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....ES

Ultradot

I'm very happy with the Ultradot I have on my handgun.  Almost put one on my 870 as well, but wanted magnification so went with a scope (Leupold 2-7x32 on a b-square mount; has worked great).  If you're decided on a red dot, the Ultradot has been flawless for me out to 50 yards (haven't used it much beyond that).
