Three (3) best powders??
« on: March 16, 2005, 11:47:39 AM »
If you could only pick 3 types of powder forever what would they be?
Reloading these calibers .222 / 22-250 / 250 savage / 7mm-08 /
.260 Remington / 7x57 ( This in Mtn Rifle) / .280 Remington.

Just curious what you guys think, need to clean up my bench somewhat
and try to simplify things.

                                        THANKS Coalminer 7

I do not shoot most of the calibers you have listed.  But for the ones that we have in common, I really like H-4831, and both  H- 4350 and IMR 4350.

This ain't a fair question.....depends on what the rifle likes.  But, that wasn't part of the equation so here would be my picks, all IMR:  4198, 3031 and 4831.  Mostly because I've loaded tons of all three of them and had good success.  Well....not tons but a bunch!!

For the .223 (that you don't list)...I have used W-748...H-335 and currently BenchMark. They all work very well.

Powders I have used the most is 2400, 3031 and Unique in that order though I should find a slower powder also. The 2400 has been good for cast loads. 3031 seems to do good in the rest of my rifle cartridges but Like I said I need to find a slower powder for my Swede and now my K31 loadings. Jim

I believe that I can reliably load the calubers listed with 2 powders.
BLC#2 for the .222.
WW 760 for the rest.

By ignoring the requested caliber recommendations, i can offer my opinion of the three powders I'd have on my bench for general pistol and rifle loading.  For pistols, Unique leads the list, can load anything from 1 1/4 shot shells down through all rifles with reduced loads and pistols from 25 ACP to large bore revolvers across a wide range of velocity.  Close after Unique would either be H 110 or Win 296 for even faster pistol loads designed for hunting.  A one rifle powder would have to be 3031, not optimum in all cases, but a "fit" for most.

I could not do it with just 3 powders. I have so many different guns that I reload for that 3 powders would not cover them all.  :D

It would be interesting to know what 3 powders have the highest number of sales wouldn't it?  Or better yet, a list of all powders by sales.......

Coalminer I think you could be best served with W748, BLC-2, and either W760 or H414 (they are close to the same powder in most instances). I have done alot of reloading with W748 and H414.......Chainsaw

coalminer, I agree with arizona jake but varget would probably work  with all the calibers you listed and varget and 4350 would work for sure. I would try the varget and 4350 first and you might not need the H4831.

I'm new here, but I sure fit the handle(gray.....)  Can't believe noone has mentioned 4895.  My other two choices would take some coin flips, but choices would include 4831, 4350, 4198, 3031, BlC, 2230-C, and 2400.

IMR 4895
AA 3100(4831)
AA 2230-C
These  because I'm well-stocked.

I have at least a pound of just about every powder made and when it's time to work up a load in a new rifle I usually try just about everything in the spectrum for that caliber.  I have noticed a pattern after 40 years however...... IMR 4064   H-335 (or equivalent) IMR 4831
There are a lot of new powders I haven't tried that seem to hold some promise.... so many bullets, so little time.

I've never used IMR 3031 in a 222 but they say it will work so I think IMR3031 and IMR 4064 for those calibers you listed above might consider 4350 or 4831 as the other powder.  I think with Hodgon making IMR powder now in short cut it's going to help if they do all that powder line if possible.  You can wear a barrel out testing all the newer powder out today.   Tom Holland

There is no "best" 3.
I own about 15 guns, and currently use/stock 10 powders in my reloading room.
Each caliber should have a proper powder selected for the particular load, instead of using some bargain-basement, one-size-fits all attitude to pinch a few pennies.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.

I'm only loadin' one cartridge now, the .260 Rem. There isn't a great deal of difference between H 4350 and H 380 in my rifles, so I use the H 380 for it's metering properties. When I run out I'm gonna try H 414 just for fun.

I think that the most popular use for H-335 is in the .223 remington, but it is applicable in a number of cartridges, usually of small case capacity and small bore, i.e. .222 rem, 22-250, 250 savage, etc.  For some loading data, check outhttp://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/index.php

Slamfire,
What bullet do you shoot?  My daughter has a 7600 in 260 and I really like that caliber.
