Three (3) best powders??
« Reply #30 on: May 11, 2005, 08:21:33 PM »
Very difficult to list just three.  But, here goes.  I've had good luck using IMR 4895 for the .30-06 and .303 British.  IMR 4320 for the .30-30 and .303 British, as well.  I have also had excellent luck using Unique in handgun cartridges.  Seems like any load with Unique shoots well.  I just got a good price on some IMR 4064 so I'll be giving it a shot (no pun intended) soon.

Good thread.  It's interesting learning what others are using and their results.

Slamfire,
What bullet do you shoot?  My daughter has a 7600 in 260 and I really like that caliber.

The 129 Hornady, our deer, bear and hog seasons are all on top of one another here, and you don't have time to change loads. I think the 120s might be a bit light for a good size bear, and our hogs are russian decendents and might want to fight.  :D

Don't load for any of the cartridges mentioned, but I do load for 30-30, 308, 30-06 and 348 win. My top 3 are:

IMR 4350
Varget
IMR 4064

Just placed an order for 8lbs of Varget-- very fast becoming my #1 powder for 308 and 348.

H4350
Varget
H380

Have worked well in my rifles.   .257 Roberts, .35 Rem, .300 Win Mag.  Then again not the calibers you've listed, but would work well for your cals as well.

Other options would be H4831SC, IMR4350

I definitely need VARGET.  It's the best powder I've used for my 223 and 7-08.  other than that, I've had decent results with the 223 using h322 and h355.

I reload for 13 different centerfires and figure I could probably get away nicely on IMR4895, IMR4064 and IMR4831.  That would pretty well cover me from .222Rem. up through 7mm Rem. Mag.  I have a lot of other powders around but those three would do in a pinch.  Just one mans opinion.  Best wishes.

sharps4590, gave the right answer right off.  I will say this.  This is a question you should not ask others as no one can answer it but yourself.  If you asked what 3 powders you would stock if you could only have three powders and live with the results that would be another matter.  And it would still depend on your barrels.  The powder is a part of the System that produces accuracy in each barreled action.  The accuracy of each arm is the question.  You set the level of accuracy and then discuss powder and bullet.  If the accuray is to hit a gallon jug at 100 yards or a beer can at the same range or a postage stamp that is the issure.  and still it is the barreled action that will speak to the answer.  Otherwise, buy factory and live simply.  JB

If you could only pick 3 types of powder forever what would they be?

IMR 4350, 4064, 4831 gets my nod for the rifle I load.

IMR 4227, 700X, 800X does well in the handgun I load.

sorry, I have no experience with the calibers you have mentioned.

From reading the posts, it seems that IMR is the popular choice of most. I suggest YOU read the load data, pick A powder, work up a load, then another, etc. and go to the range. I doubt few of us reload to 'save $$', it is the "loading your own" and then going to the range and achieving the results you are after. I have found EACH gun will have it's own favorite load, powder, bullet and primer. The "FUN", if you can call it that is the pursuit.

Always start out with a minimum recommended charge and work your way up, IF you need more punch. Each different gr bullet will have a different powder need.

ALWAYS BE SAFE and enjoy this 'sport/pasttime'.
