.222 Remington and Varget Powder
« on: March 16, 2005, 04:06:55 PM »
Just bought some 40 and 50 gr. Vmax hornady bullets.  My Horandy manual doesn't list Varget for the 40 gr. bullets.  Anybody have any load
suggestions for the 40 gr. and Varget.

Would take any other load combinations for the .222

I called Hodgdon about this very subject. the tech that I spoke with told me that in the 222, varget showed pressure problems with .40 gr bullets but had excellent results with .50 grainers. I tried 24 gr with the 50 gr v-max in my CZ 527 American and the results were awsome accuracy and no pressure signs. H-4198 would be a better choice with the 40 grain bullets but I havn't had a chance to try it yet.

I use H4198 with the 40gr bullets.  My load is 21.5 grains.

I'm a bit hesitant to use Varget in my .222Rems. (2).  Not that it's dangerous or anything, but the case capacity is smallish for Varget.  However, I've never tried it with the lighter 40-45gr. bullets.  Just one mans opinion.  Best wishes.

You can't go wrong with 4198 and H322 in 222rem, those are the two can's of powder you need try.

I have had very inconsistent results with varget.  The only other powder I have tried is IMR 4895 and my groups are better and more consistent.

Coalminer7 - I have a Rem classic in 222 also and have not been reloading long, but the best groups I have achieved so far are speer 50 grainers over 24 grains of IMR 4895.  My average group size is .75, tighter than my best group with 52 grain sierra matchkings.  I was wondering if you would be willing to share any pet loads?

Idaho_Hick,
Haven't found the magic load yet, but I did shoot a 1" group
at 200 yds about 3 weeks back using 20.0 if imr 4198 and 40 gr Vmax.
BLC #  has some potential but haven't played with this gun a whole lot.
Your groups do not seem bad, Varget seems to heat my guns up pretty
quick.  It has been so HOT her in southcentral Pa. this year that I kinda
haven't had the desire to really get after it as  far as shooting goes.  If I stumble onto a load i have no problem in sharing it.  Keep in touch.

                            thanks  Coalminer7

I purchased my Rem. 40XBBR in .222Rem. back when they were made in their custom shop and came complete with targets.  In fact, a rifle then wouldn't leave the plant unless it shot 5 shot groups at 100yds. in .4" or smaller.  My targets were shot with Rem. 52gr. Rem. HPBR bullets and IMR4895 23.5grs.  I get just as good results with IMR4198 19.8grs.  Groups in the .2"s are quite common.  Almost any good 52gr. bullet is accurate, especially Bergers and Sierras.  Best wishes.

+1 for Little Magnum. IMR 4198 and H322 have provided the best results in my .222.
