I'm within a hair's breath (whatever that is!) of buying one of Doug Turnbull's beautiful SAA 45 Colt Revolvers. Does anybody here know of any reason why I shouldn't?

If ya want it and can afford it then just buy it. Since when do we need a reason to buy what we want if we can afford it? For a short while longer here in America we can still buy such things just cuz we want it.

I have no argument about Turnbull's prices; I've seen his workmanship and it's worth every dime. But what I'm wondering is why most lesser restoration (like rebluing) is generally considered to detract from the value of an older gun. It seems like "all-original" (warts and all) is better than re-worked. And how does true "factory" refinishing effect value?

Six months ago, I purchased two of his .45 SAA (sequentially numbered) to use for Cowboy Action Shooting.
At the time, they were only $900 a piece, and the prices were about to go up, so I made the plunge.

By far, they are the most beautiful guns I own. The fit, finish, and quality is unmatched.

Now, my problem is... they're too pretty to knock around with Cowboy Action Shooting.

A good excuse to get a couple of the new Vaqueros

Yukon, that's my concern too! If this gun is a pretty in real life as it is in American Hangunner then it just my lay in my gunsafe for a LONG time before I can get myself to put some loads thru it. Of course, if it then turns out to be a real tack driver I'll hate myself for not shooting it sooner.

Two years ago, just before my Dad passed away, he passed onto me an older model S&W model 29,hand carved and gold inlayed by Neil Hartliep. Topped off with elephant ivory grips.

To this day, I cannot shoot it - too pretty!

There is nothing wrong at all with buying fine guns. The only problem is that normal priced guns just dont fill the need like they use to.

But they are made to SHOOT!!! Would you buy a beautiful car and not drive it? Would you have a beautiful wife and not .... (never mind). The point being that these guns were made to shoot, it would be a shame not to enjoy them. True, if it is an old family heirloom, then I wouldn't push top loads but use 'regular' factory equivalent loads in her. I have a Colt 1911 on layway now. It is 1 0f 500 with an engraved slide and other goodies. Guess what? I fully intend to take it to a couple of IDPA matches! One of my greatest pleasures is walking around a gun show and asking the dealer who has a beautiful, engraved gun with 14 nylon ties around the hammer so no one can cock it, 'How does that gun shoot?' 44 Man

I've examined some old Winchester's that have been restored at Turnbull's. The beauty of the color case hardening has to be seen to be believed.

As I understand it , Doug does the case-hardening on the cylinder frames & hammers for United States Firearms, & from what I can see, it's magnificent. jd45.

BAD NEWS !! The gun arrived at Bilson's in Turlock and when they went to the PRC "approved gun" list it was nowhere to be found. I'm sure the article in Am. Hndgnr. said it was CA approved but perhaps not so. I'm waiting to hear from DTR about their experiences selling guns in the PRC and just what catagory they are sold under. If it can be called a replica I think it'll fly but otherwise...................well, I just don't wanna think about it.

Dusty is there some othe list in the statute that defines what "certain single-action revolvers" means or is this more CA gun grabber lingo meaning you can see it but can't have it.

Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.

Dusty - I can't believe the problem you are having!! I was looking forward to seeing your reply after you received the pistol.

I grew up in California, I even own 5 acres and a house outside of Temecula. But I actually have not lived there for the past 10 years.

Every year, I see the gun laws in CA getting more and more out of hand. It would seem CA's new tactic is not to exclude certain types of weapons, but fail to include weapons in their list! Just another means to their ends.

I think it's time to pull up stakes, and completely get away from CA. At least here in Nebraska they don't make you feel like a criminal for owning a gun.

It looks like the gun is going to pass as a replica, which in fact it is. If things go well I'll have it in less than two weeks (PRC remember). That gun is so pretty I can't believe it. The bluing is gorgeous, and that case hardening is to die for. Soon, SOON!! As a matter of fact I'll pick it up on the 23rd. I'm just gitt'n all sticky and sweaty think'n about it!!

I got it!! It lays safely in my safe along side several other revolvers who I'm sure are admiring that beautiful frame and the terrific bluing. Now, if I can get some time off from work in the next 90 days it'll take a trip to the range to see what its got.

Good to hear you finally got it! You will love the way it shoots (even better than it looks!).

I ordered two consecutively numbered ones last last year for Cowboy Action Shooting. Didn't have a chance to use them until yesterday at the first local shoot of the year. The weather was great, the people even better - and the guns performed flawlessly. It was a good day!

ONE OF THESE DAYS I'll get some time off and get to the range and give it a go. I want to compare it to my 3 3/4" Vaquero which is out right now getting a trigger job (not that the original trigger work was all that bad but I like'm light, slick, and crisp).
