I just recently bought my first Marlin centerfire rifle. It's a 336 in 30-30 and was made in 1980, judging from the serial number. What I'm trying to find out is what model is it? 336C? or what.

It doesn't have any checkering, has a 20 inch barrel, stock has the pistol grip, ramp front sight, rear sight has the sliding elevator.

BTW, having taken it completely to pieces and put it back together, it seems to be in great shape. The gunsmith I bought it from let me have it for only $185. I think I got a good deal.

The model should be stamped on the barrel - mine reads "Mod 336CS".

If its in good shape you got a deal.

Well, Coyote Hunter, the barrel just says model 336. Maybe that's what the basic no-frills model was called back then?

Now if Winter would just let go of Pennsylvania, I might get to the range and see what this rifle will do.

Its probably just that - a "336". Just a wild guess on my part. Is the stoc real walunt or "walnut finished", does it have grip caps, white-line spacers, or any other distinguishing features?

Am hoping to get mine out this Saturday if the weather cooperates. Hopefully Daughters #2 and #3 will come along...

Coyote Hunter, the stock looks like walnut and it does has the grip caps and white spacers under the grip cap and butt plate. The butt plate is not a pad. It does not have any sling swivels. Seems to be a mixture of fancy and basic.

The "C" in the Marlin 336C designation just stands for Carbine.

Unless you have a straight western-style stock (no pistol grip) you have a Marlin 336C.

I believe that I last heard that Marlin has made 4 million of them?

In extremely good shape, these generally go for $275 to $300 if they have a Walnut stock. So, if you have a Walnut stock, then you got a great deal
