I am looking for some input on how well Redfield scopes, particularly the Five Star and Tracker lines, compare to their competition.

I have both! They are on Weatherbys, and have never let me down deer
hunting, or on the range. Each are over 15 years old.. So I don't know how the quality may be now..

If you are considering a new Redfield, Meade is revamping the line and will make some pretty nice changes from what I've read at RFC. They will be moving their assembly to the US but will still be using foreign components just as Burris and Leupold do now.

It is great to see they are trying to bring back Redfield to a status they once had. Too bad they had Simmons drop the Whitetail Expedition...now that was a BARGAIN for what you got for your money.

Meade also owns Simmons and is revamping that line as well. The new Master series will probably be even better than the WTE/WTC lines. Check out their 2005 catalog if you can wait long enough for it to download, a bit slow on dialup and it's almost 3mb.

Thanks for the information. I noticed a Natchez add in Shotgun News and they had a pretty good price on a Redfield. They also had a Whitetail Expiditon for around $99. Are these good scopes?

I'm sure glad you asked this ques. I've been meaning to but keep forgetting. I have an old 3-9-40 redfield thats at least 12yrs. old it has the TV screen shape and I really like it but I dont know about the new ones . I'll keep checking I'd like to get one , I've never had a problem with the one I've got. I've had it on everything from a .22 - 50 cal muzzle loader.

In my opinion, the Whitetail Expedition is an excellent scope for the money. I have a Leupold M8 and I slightly favor the optics of my Simmons...my wallet definately does!

I've had a couple of Redfields before...1 with the wide angle TV lens too...the only fault I had was they just didn't give enough eye relief for me...other than that ...great scopes...

Thats how I got the name Broken Scope. I had a 2x7 tv screen probably 13 years old that was absolutely a piece of junk. Had to send it back three times. Beware of companys that keep changing ownership. Two of the times it looked like the crosshairs were fraying and the other a middle lens came loose. It cost me approx 30 dollars everytime I had to send it back and service sucked. Like I said that was the older company. Ill never own another and that was a 180.00 scope. I would look at other brands.

I had a Redfield Widefield scope for many years on my BAR 7mag and it was flawless. It is still on the gun, except my brother now owns it (for now...). Very good scope.

I just picked up a new Redfield Tracker from Academy Sports as a "special purchase" and it was only $75.00. It appears to be well made and is very clear, but we'll see how it does once I get to shoot it. I have it on my NEW Handi-rifle in 7mm-08.

I think the intermediate years of production are when Redfield products lost the quality they once had. The older Japan built scopes are the good ones, but those build in China probably suffer from the same issues as a lot of other Chinese built optics, lack of quality control, some are good, others are dogs.
