« on: March 18, 2005, 04:00:28 AM »
hi.

Has anyone used 60 grain long Rifle ammo ?  I think the brand name is Aguila SP?   Is it any good? How accurate is it?

Thanks,

Yep I have tried it in a couple different .22 LR Handguns & Rifles. In the guns I shot it in the accuracy was terrible, and I experienced a lot of bullets keyholeing. These bullets are way to long for the Rifling Twist common to most .22's, and need a faster twist barrel.

Most guns do not like it but some do. In a semi auto the brass starts to eject do to the short case and you get some blowby. My Romanian 69 shot them fine and they grouped  real well at 25 yards but shot low a couple of inches due to the heavier bullet. I would think at a longer distance they may tumble and the drop would really not be good unless you sighted your gun in specifically for this cartridge if it shot well in your gun. I would think a longer barrel would help over a shorter one to give the heavier slug more time to stabilize. The only way you can be sure is to try a box in your gun.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

The boolit is too long for the standard .22 l.r. rifling.
They don't cycle well in semi-autos. I have a bolt Remmie 512 that shot them well at 25 , but at 50 groups were like shotgun patterns.
Glad I only bought a couple boxes.
Junk.

Would love to squirrel hunt with them. Tried them on a couple of CLOSE shots, perform well...no accuracy. I have tried them in:

Romanian Mod 69 ..............accuracy unacceptable past 20 yards.
Rem. 512 Targetmaster...... accuracy unacceptable at any range.
Rem. 514  ......................... accuracy unacceptable.
Stevens single shot............. accuracy terrible.
Norinco J-26....................... accuracy terrible.
Rem. Nylon 66.................... accuracy terrible, fail to eject.
Trash can........................... remaining rounds groupd nicely in bottom.

Yea my Romanian 69 was good at 25 but not good after that dropped quite a bit though so it really is not a good proposition. Maybe if they lightened it to 50 grains it would work and still give more thump than a 40 grainer. Jim

hi :  i have tried these in a cz 452  and  hit the target at 50 yds once or twice with keyholing bullets out of 5 shots , so they went in the cubboard thinking i will probably not use them again , a few months later i got a paco kelly tool and tried them in their and they shot good , good enough any way to hit 2 starling sized birds at 90 yds with 5 shots , so i went and bought a brick of them they are fun to shoot if they shoot accurately vorquatsen also makes a 1 in 9 twist barrel for this round .

Add a Ruger 77/22, 10/22 and a an old Savage single shot to that list.  Seeing that accuracy ranks high on my list these didn't make the list at all.  Lawdog

I have a Glenfield model 10 single shot zeroed
specifically for them at 75 yds. They are deadly accurate from it.
I have also fired them in my Remington my Winchester
My Glenfield model 20  my High Standard Gameking
My Daisy model 8 and my Rossi Pump
all with similar results. I have never had one keyhole
that I know of? They have excellent penetration on animals
such as Opossum and Racoon and easily "Perforate"
feral dogs also. The one thing that I do not like is their
tendency to ricochet.

S. Sumner;
Shot a couple of large fox squirrels from very short yardage. I believe that this ammo would perform extremely well on small game. So far I have been unable to acheive the accuracy that I need to hit the game reliably from a distance of over 15 yards. I'm glad to hear that you are having better results. I have not given up, but I am looking for a .22 with a little faster rate of twist. Read on Aguila's site of a guy shooting beaver with this round with great results. Beaver are pretty large and tough, I would love to be able to use this ammo.

best to you and yours...

I have tried them in quite a few guns also with similar results. They make a barrel for the 10/22 thats a 1:9 twist to stabilize these heavy bullets. My one Marlin model 25 shoots them all over, yet my Marlin model 60 shoots them well. They are deadly on woodchucks and feral cats aren't fond of them either. :)

I tried some out of several guns, from a Marlin Buckeroo, to an old Remington single-shot that belonged to my wife's grandfather.  The rounds cycled well out of my Ruger 10-22.  I shot a possum with my Browning BL-22 and it turned the possum around 90 degrees.  I think it would be at its best as a hunting round, but the trajectory is the limiting factor.  If I were to want to hunt with it, I would have to set up a rifle to use it exclusively.

I have been shooting Aguila 60 SSS for 3 years out of 6 guns, here are my results:

T/C carbine with 22 match barrel, 5 shot same hole groups at 50 yds, .55" groups at 80 yds.

Win mdl 61 gives 1.1" groups at 50 yds

Marlin 39a gives .8" groups at 50 yds.

Taurus 62 gives 1" groups at 50yds

Marlin 60 gives 1.3" groups at 50yds

Savage MKII gives .70 groups at 50yds

I buy 2 cases at a time and shoot the heck out of it. Penetration on feral dogs is supreme. I have seen it exit through 15" of flesh and kill very quickly. It appears I have been supremely lucky to have this ammo shoot so well out of several guns. It does drop more than standard but I keep my T/C zeroed at 70 yds and just use a bit of Kentucky windage to compensate.

I can't get them to shoot worth squat in my rifles.  BUT they are the hunting bullet for my single six good accuracy and they really knock rabbits for a loop.

Seems odd that that short barrel would stablize them but then I just had a thought some times pistols have a faster twist because they have short barrels to stablize bullets. Any one know what the twist is in the Single Sixes?? Jim

I find that the older twentytwo rifles tend to do better with them than the mewer designs - maybe 'cause the newer guns are made with the hotter Hi-velocity loads in mind?  My Romanian M69 likes them, as does my old Marlin 80DL.
My Buckmark and Whitney Wolverine pistols love them!  Until I did a bit of work on the chamber, the Whitney would only cycle the Aguila SSS rounds!  Strange.  Now it cycles all, but still likes the Triple-S.  They make a very authoritative whack on a soda can!   8)

Well my gunsmith told me that pistols use the same twist 1 in 16 for both rifles and shortguns so I sure do not know why that 60 grain bullet would work in a short barrel and it may not at longer distances but I tried it in my Clone of the Walther Olympia 4.5 inch barrel target pistol today at a gravel pit and dang it shot good.  I shot at a black plastic shell holder like you get in a ammo box for centerfire ammo  at 15 to 20 yards and bounced it 6 out of 7 times. So evidently my pistol likes it too. Jim

I have an old Ruger Bearcat that is deadly out to 15-20 yds.  Ruger 10-22 that's fine til 25 yds. then they tumble.  Have more rifles to try them in, if it ever cools down.

ok guys problem with the 60 grain .22lr is the twist 1:16 will not cut it but 1:9 twist can.
get a gun that can use the green mountain
barrel problem solved for

ruger 10/22 with houge stock and a green mountain barrel
20" Blue Fluted Barrel  920" heavy barrel 1:9

works wonders when hunting small game longer ranges hehe

and if i need to use the hyper velocity ammo
also from green mountain
Blue Fluted barrel for Hyper Velocity ammo 1:18 twist Stinger Chamber for the .22 LR
.920  Sporter Diameter Barrel 20"

when i do my next 10/22 with all i need
scope these 2 barrels and the houge stock mmmm plenty of accuracy
