6.5 X 55 correct rim diameter???
« on: March 18, 2005, 04:31:49 AM »
Can anyone tell me the correct rim diameter for a swedish mauser m38.  I have heard that there is a variation between the military brass and our new domestic brass.  Can anyone shed any light on this subject?

Thanks,

270

The Hornady book list it as .476. I would guess there would be variations in brass as to who may make it. As long as it is close to standard a bit off one way or the other should not make any significant difference as I am sure there are tolerances built in for this situation. Jim

There were slight differences from country to country,
several scandinavian countries used this round.
They have in the last 5 or 6 years standardized the
round as the 6.5 SKAN.
You will encounter several diameters.

Samples taken from my fired brass:
Federal .474
R-P .472-3
PMC .475-7
Norma .477
Lapua .478
Raufoss (Norwegian military 02-98) .478-9

I've gotten the best groups with the Lapua brass, but it's more expensive.

A while back the American companies when American companies started making 6.5x55, for some reason they used the same base diameter as .308 oe 30-06, which is too small.  The fired cases developed a noticeable bulge at the base.  Supposedly they have corrected this problem.

FWIW, 7.5 Frog is the same base diameter as Swedish round and 7.5 Swiss is larger still (why you can use .284 brass to make it).

Oh really I may need to replace my brass for my AG42B then. Where can I check up on this?
