Which chronograph
« on: March 18, 2005, 05:59:09 AM »
Okay, it's time to breakdown and get one.  After 12+ years of reloading I've decided to go to the next level and get one.  I want to see what I'm getting from all the reloading I've done.

That being said which chrono do you have/want and why/why not do you like it?

Thanks,

Josh

P.S.  willing to spend around $200 on this so cost isn't a major issue.

I just started reloading and have researched chronys extensively, in a nutshell, a popular bargain chrono is the Shooting Chronies F-1 Master and the best is an Oehler 35, I got the F-1 and it works fine as long as I do everything right, but I've read of a lot of problems with them, mostly due to operator/setup error. Those with the Oehler are real happy, pretty much without exception. Also have read of a LOT of machines that were shot by their owners!  As one writer put it, if you haven't shot a chrono yet, you will sooner or later! This chrony setup here helps avoid that problem....

Like the man said " Its not 'if' you will end up shooting your chronograph, its when" . With that thought it mind I would start cheap.....Chrony F1 is $80 and parts/repairs are cheap. You can always put it on ebay ...sell it make your money back and buy a nicer unit.

I guess I'm  safe to buy one! I shot some one else's when one of the rings gave way on my 45-70 14" T/C. Luckily I only hit the sky screen leg.  :(

I just got the shootin chrony beta.  Have not been able to use it yet because we dont have any days with temps over 30.  From what the directions say, they require a surrounding temp of between 30 - 100.

I've been using the pro chrono from competition electronics for several years...no complaints period... heck I dont even put the 'rods" on it let alone the darn miserable "screen defuser" things... has to be at least 10 years and 5 to 7 users and aint been shot yet.... thanks now I will shoot the darn thing tomorrow.... BTW rather than use those darn light defusers, place the unit strategically under shelter (or a tree) shadow but still "Looking) up at clear sky.... or wait for overcast ( the easy way where I live).... An Invaluable tool whichever one you get... Marty

I use the cheapest Chrony, and put it on a camera tripod. I wrapped a bit of black electrician's tape around the midpoint of the rods and then position the tripod so that my line of sight goes just above the black tape. After five years of use I have yet to shoot the Chrony.

I like that 'laser pointer taped to the barrel' idea.  They're cheap enough for the little keychain ones.  I clipped the skyscreen supports on mine last year... just barely clipped the edge of it...  scared the juice outta me.  I kinda like my chrono intact.  I have the CED milennium with the IR illuminators.. works like a charm but replacing a shot up support might be a little more pricey than a Chrony rod.
