Air Silhouette Sporter Class Rifles?
« on: March 18, 2005, 08:51:55 AM »
Now that the Air silhouette sporter class has opened up to include PCP guns, what is a good PCP gun for that class? I am at present shooting a AA Pro-sport, I don’ even know if that is a legal sporter gun. You can see a picture at.
http://www.straightshooters.com/airarms/aaprosport.html
I am looking at the Theoben Rapid 12 as a posibable replacement, but the stock is pretty unique, is it sporter class? You can see a picture at
http://www.straightshooters.com/theoben/thrapid12.html
I hope someone can help me or point me in the right direction.
Thanks Dave Cjavascript:emoticon('')

Right now, AFAIK anything that isn't marketed as a target (or field target) gun is a sporter. (The worm can that the committee opened up isn't very specific.)

IMO both rifles you pointed out are legal sporters -- assuming that you can make the weight limit all up.

I don't know what will shake out as the 'best' sporter under the new rules -- but the Walther Hunter should probably be looked at by anyone ready to spend the kind of money that's being asked for the Theoben.

Airgun silhouette doesn't really demand 'repeater' capability. I don't know how much that feature adds to the Theoben pricing...

Walther Hunter

Hi nomad
The only Walther Hunter i can find in the walter cataloge is the LG300 Hunter:
http://www.carl-walther.de/englisch/sport/sport-96.html
This to me looks more like a open class gun not a sporter. Any more ideas? What's the best way to find out which class a Gun fits in?

That rifle is being accepted as a sporter under this year's interpretation of the rules. (At least in Texas and California.) Walther advertises it as a Hunter -- not a target model --  and it makes weight. You know it 'looks like' an Open gun and I know it 'looks like' an Open gun but the rule as it stands allows any factory 'Sporter' -- and that has always been accepted to mean any rifle designed for field use...as opposed to those made for formal target (or 'Field Target') shooting. The LG300 Hunter qualifies under that interpretation.

Whether it will still be legal next year is anyone's guess!

The new rule is pretty liberal. Basically, it has created two Open classes...an 11 pound Open class -- that used to be 'Sporter' class -- and a 16 pound Open class that remains as it was.

I don't see how NRA can disallow the LG300 Hunter -- and neither does any other airgun match director with whom I've spoken. If you know of a match director who is not permitting it, please advise me as I'd like to know what criteria he's using to do that.

Last time that I spoke with Neal Stepp at ISS in Ft Worth, he had them on order and, I 'think' had shipping confirmation. Whether they've cleared customs and arrived in the shop I don't know. 817-595-2090

Hi nomad
Thanks for your help, I ordered mine to day, should be with me by the end of the week, I will let you know how it works out. I did speak to Greg Conner today and he confirmed basically what you were saying about 2 open classes. If the Walther works out I might even shoot it in the sporter and the open classes. If you are going to Winnsboro I’ll buy you drink. I’m the one with the accent. Y’all know it when you hear it.
Cheers Dave C
Sorry  Bill. I’ll let you hold mine….LOL javascript:emoticon(':D')

Glad to help. (Hopefully both of you!)

Slo -- wondering about the 'accent'? (I'm from Bucks county PA originally. If it's that accent, I'm used to it!)
Also, when you offered to buy a drink, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt (remember that I'm a transplanted yankee from right down the road) that you weren't aware that Budweiser's one of the match sponsors and beer's FREE at Winnsboro AFTER the shooting is done for the day?  :-D

Free Beer!!. I didn’t know, in that case I will buy you 2!
The Boston Tea party is a very long story so I will save it until Winnsboro, besides I know how sensitive you are Bill, and I don’t want to upset you again.
Your Driving… ^&%$#….Only if you drive it like you stole it…LOL… Remember “Like a Rock”….He with the most tickets wins… you have some catching up to do…
Sorry nomad you have to excuse us. Bill once made a mistake, and said something nice about me, even after Thousands of $ of therapy, he still greaves over it….LOL

Dawg,
Careful on that betting thing. I was there and I still remember what happened at Jax last year with betting and all.  Hornet accepts travelers checks too. :) I'm hoping to make Jax again next year. I hate to miss the hotel parties with Mclemore and crew. Good luck in Jax!

I've been wondering if a couple of stiff belts about 16 hours after Thursday's practice and the same thing following the Friday and Saturday proceedings might not help me ward off those debilitating match nerves?  :)

Hornetx60,

You did't get my check? I addressed it to Bill in PA, how many could there be in that yankee state, better investigate this.

Bring the trigger gauge, I'm just dumb enough to fall for that trick twice, you should be ashamed of yourself for picking on dumb animals and vern for backing you up, now masshole is a different story.

Duckgumbo, My entry will be in the mail shortly along with my British friend. Now as for Varner...I think he is just to cowardly to come back down to Winnsboro...I don't know why he's so shy Hell he's gotten used to being beaten up here so having it done in another state shouldn't matter much......Lets see if him and Spicher have the nads to show up in Winnsboro.
