20 grain .17 HMR
« on: March 18, 2005, 11:11:33 AM »
Got to take the Sportster .17 HMR out for awhile today. Shot about 75 rounds through it with Hornady 20 gr., Honady V-Max 17 gr., and Federal 17 gr. Mine definitely likes the 17 grain much better. Hornady V-Max and Federal were really close with the Hornady coming out on top by a little bit. Never did get the 20 gr. to group well. Would put a couple of rounds touching and then throw the next two 1" to 1-1/2" away. Anyone else have this same experience? :?  :?

Try the CCI GamePoint 20gr loads, I have 4 hmrs, each has its own preference to ammo.....and that changes when I try a different lot number of the same ammo....After they get broke in well, they aren't as picky, but they still don't all shoot the same ammo well.

Good shootin!!

Thanks, will give those a try if I can find. No one around here has a great selection, but I travel through Benton, TN quite a bit, and there is a great shop there that will have them if they are available. Mine really seemed to settle down after about 20 rounds today. Definitely shoots better dirty.

Wasn't pleased with the 17 gr CCIs on groundhog...in comparison to my .22 mag...

Are the 20 gr bullets any better than the 17 gr  on game ?

greenjeans, mine is the same. Probably has ~175 rounds through it now and can't get the 20gr Hornady's to group at all well (>1" @ 50m, never less).

In the 17gr it seems to like the v-max type projectiles better than the hollow points too, consistently ~.7" @ 50m with the v-max.

Took both the Sportsters out yesterday, .22 and .17HMR. Shooting both at 50 yds. Had a new scope on the .22 and wanted to get it sighted in. Before the day was over it was shooting 1" consistently. Had several groups with 3 shots around 1/2" and then would put the other two outsid an inch. Not bad for me and Federal bulk pak. I think I'm going to be really pleased with this little rifle. I also put about 40 rounds of Federal HP 17 grain through the HMR and got some really good 3 shot groups. This one is going to shoot well, also. I think mine will shoot the V-Max a little better based on my first time out, but didn't have any on hand yesterday.

Off topic, but I put the Bushnell Sportsman 4 x 12 - 40 AO from Wally World on both of them. Cost $70 and I have really been pleased. The Bushnell web site does not list this scope in the Sportsman series. Could this be a special run just for Wal-Mart?
