Russian Ball
« on: March 18, 2005, 01:27:08 PM »
I picked up some Russian made (Wolf) ammo. For $4.99, I figured it would be interesting at the range. In a box I had a couple of flyers, which you know was me. All were within 2.5", with half the box in a hole about an inch. I have the Handi frame with a .308 that to me looks almost bull.
I ordered the reg .308. Anyway if one does not reload, may be a cheap way out. This stuff flew just like corelokd 150's.
I grew up next to a military base. Scavanged ball ammo was all I had.
Shot my early bucks with ball. All one shot kills, that dropped on the spot, or close recovery... I use only corelokd for hunting, but for a little fun at the range Russian Ball was very good in my Handi setup.
Thought you guys would want to know....! (steel non reuseable case).

62 grain Wolf shot pretty well in my handi too tscott..and the handi is not suppose to shoot heavier bullets than 55 grains very well because of the twist... I guess the factory forgot to tell my barrel....I did shoot some 75 grain Molly boat tail match stuff a buddy had in my handi and I could't tell where it was hitting at 100 yards...moved up to 50 ...still couldn't see whare it was hittin....moved the target to 25 yards and it was keyholeing the rounds all over the paper at 25 yards!!!    Sooooo those don't shoot very well in mine... :-D  :-D  :-D  the white box 45 grainers are the bomb in my rifle though...I haven't found any reload(yet!) that compares in accuracy to those...

P.S....by the way.. be careful admitting that ya shoot cheap, dirty burning, Russian ammo in your beloved Handi on this forum...there are some that might become upset by this news... :-D  :-D  :-D  :D

Welll....I'll chime in here...

First off...using FMJ ammo isn't advisable to hunt deer with...nor is it legal to do so in a-lot of places...and as to dropping them in their tracks with it..I sincerly doubt it...unless it was a CNS hit each and everytime...

Second...I haven't heard of too many 308 Handi's that will shoot Wolfs ammo wurth a durn, standard barrels or bull barrels.....and have it eject readily...mine wouldn't...and I personally know of 3 others that won't.. even after having the chambers polished..I can't say every 308 Handi is like that ...but most from what I've seen and read...that's the case..no-pun intended...

No-one is saying you have to spend $1.50 per bullet to kill a deer...heck...my Nosler partitions don't even cost that much... ...but every rifle has it's preference...as does most shooters...I equate using "ball" ammo on deer...to the same as using a field tipped arrow...it kills about the same....and see no sense in using them...and I'm glad the poster says he uses core-locks for his hunting anyway...

I used ball ammo as a youngster, with no money. Yes, I did shoot 3 bucks with it in HS in the 60's. It was not illegal! Deer hunting is vastly different today. Then it was meat on the table. Today, it is one upmanship
to a large degree. Then as now I really never thought putting a hole in an animal required a lot of skill. I love deer hunting, and at only 58 I look forward to another 30 years! The Handi is low on my pecking order for deer rifles, although I enjoy shooting it. It ejects Wolf ammo perfectly.
My go to gun is a 1955 99f, in .300 Savage. I would never use anything other than 180 corelokd, and I would never take a shot, unless I was confident the animal I chose would drop on the spot or in close proximity.
Doubts on ball one shot takedowns? How about behind the ear, between the shoulder blades, or even high on the shoulder for that matter.
Think I'll try a little ball in my Mark V 30-06.. Just at the range!

I can miss with anything.  A hit with a .308 ball round is a lot better then a miss with a cannon.  It is illegal in most areas though.  Where is that bullet going after it passes through.  I hope not in my direction.  As for killing deer, people in my area have been known to kill deer with a stick tied to a stone.  And there are feathers on the stick.  I, for one have no objection to anything you may use.  Just be good with it.

That's about as sweet a deer gun as they come...and yep...I know where your talking about hitting them...it will drop them in their tracks...those CNS hits are amazing...and I think we all have done stuff( at least us old farts  ) that we shouldn't of have...

Mitchell...your opinion counts my friend...as does everyones...so...don't take offence to my replies...they are in the generality of things... and usually not directed at anyone person...me..as far as my favorite deer hunting bullets...I have a bunch of them...I do like the expensive ones too...but for the most part...with most on-line stores discounting the Speer Grand Slams...it really doesn't make a lot of sense not to cash in on them. Quickdtoo just picked up some from midway at $8.00 for 50 for the 160 grainers in 7MM...so at $16 per 100 that is a real good buy for a premium bullet..... While they may not fly as flat as some of the Ballistic Tipped bullets...they have always worked, just as good as most others.......it's all a matter of perspective anyway...and what shoots the best from your rifle...I've had some rifles just flat out refuse to group some of the most expensive bullets around...and do extremely well with some of the cheapest...just the nature of the beast... :-D

Just so no one goes looking for the wrong bullets at Midway, the $8 per 50 were 7mm 175gr Grand Slams....great buy, got em just to save from shooting the expensive $20 per 50 160gr Nosler partitions for sight in and load work basics, then I'll fine tune with the $$NP bullets in the Brenneke!!

They also have em in 150gr .308 for $8.....
