308 or 30-06 ?

Which performs better out of  a 15 inch barrel?   Does anyone have experience with the '06 out of a pistol?  I see a lot of used ones for sale.

I have one of each and I can't see much difference - the .308 is probably more efficient, tho'.  Either one of them makes a great long range handgun for sure........The '06 draws a lot of attention at the range!

I had the 15" .06 in my Encore. It was the barrel that came with the gun as a whole, when I bought it.
I thought it was a little much at first, and it threw a hell of a fireball off the bench.
With handloads I got pretty decent groups and dropped a buck at over 300yds with it before trading it off.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd opt for the .308. As it was said, it's really more efficient, and overall, with the same weight bullets, it only loses 120-150fps to the .30-06 using less powder.
Inherently, it's much more accurate as well.

I also have a 30-06 in a 16" competitor. I would also have chosen the 308 knowing what I do now with the 06. It's not hard to get 2700 fps with a 165 gr bullet and like handgunr this gun accounted for my farthest deer at over 400 yards. I believe that the 308 will do what the 30-06 will do with 165's and under and do it with less powder and less recoil. I'm sure it would be more accurate as well I have to really work to get my 06 to hit under the 1" mark at 100.
 Hope you make the right choice on which caliber I'm sure you will because there really isn't a bad choice between the two it depends what you will use it for.

I had both and liked the 30-06 better. You can get like performance in the guns, but there was just something about the 06 that I liked.  :D

I'm with you on that one Chris.

In either the rifle, or the pistol though, the .308 is inherently more accurate as it's not quite as "overbore" dimensionally, than the .30-06.
Although the accuracy difference isn't super great, it's enough to make LE, and Federal agencies, as well as the military to take notice of it's exceptional accuracy benefits when it comes to Sniper/Observer teams.
I trained with my ERT team as well as certify with others, and 90% of all the teams that were there, were packing the .308 bolt guns.

I have an Encore in .243, and a Striker in 7mm-08. Anything built on the .308 cartridge seems to group just that much better.
