.243 - twist rate - light weight bullets
« on: March 20, 2005, 05:32:03 AM »
Again I just picked up my first .243 ever, a Ruger Compact w/the 16 1/2" barrel and 1 in 9" twist.

Will this twist rate work well with the light weight 55 - 60 grn .243 bullets?

Being such a short barrel I won't be able to push them to 4000 fps like some reloading data shows for the 55 grn bullets, but I'm wondering if it's worth my time & $$$ to try these light bullets??!!

Any information you would share with me about this would be greatly appreciated!

It absolutely IS worth the trouble.  My M77 has the fast twist and shoots the BTip 55s into the .7s regularly, with a few groups well under that.  My MV is 4150 fps.  No guarantees of course, every rifle is different, but try it.

You may get satifactory accuracy at close range but I would guess that it will fall off at longer ranges. You definately will not get the velosities of the longer barrels. Now, would it worth trying the liter bullets????????? ABSOLUTELY. If you are going to varmint hunt with the gun.
