Best deer load

At the range .490 Hornady, .010 lubed patch, 70gr of 777 was my most accurate load. With each 5gr increase above 70 the balls flew further high and to the left.
Does this sound right? I would like to use the accurate 70gr charge for deer inside of 75 yds. Is this too light?

It will be a great deer load. Plenty of power.

 Gotta agree with that!

Perfect load. That'll drop any Deer in North America!!

I complement you tscott on your concern for accuracy, and not falling victim to "magnumitis" :D

The high and left doesn't sound right but every rifle is an entity unto itself.  The Lyman GPR I had would move low and left as I decreased the charge....Generally a higher velocity will print lower......evidently my old rifle and yours got that part mixed up..Smile

The 70 gr. load will be fine.

My wife and I have taken many whitetails with 70g of Pyrodex and a .495 round ball. Definitely, 70g of 777 will do the job inside of 100 yards.

:-D     Outstanding............someone without the urge to turn a muzzleloader into fire breathing rip snorting dragon that no one can hit anything with.  My compliments along with the others.  You have done what all of us,or at least most of use strive to find for each and every rifle that we own.............the " optimum" load for your rifle.  Yes,that load will do what you want it to for any deer on this continant....and then some inside of that yardage that you are looking for. ..............stay safe......King

Thanks for the replies / advice. After 45 years of deer hunting, I would quit tomorrow If I was not able to take deer deep in the woods, with the confidence of 1 shot kills. I will go with the 70gr 777 load...
I would never compromise accuracy over magnum charges. Scotty
