Reloading dies for the 45-70 Gov.
« on: March 20, 2005, 10:47:36 AM »
What is the best way to go for reloading dies for the 45-70 Gov.Also, which is the proper crimp to use for a lever action guide gun.The rifle will be used for hunting only and not  for compitition unless my friends want to make a little wager.

I've used hornady and lee the hornady seating die had what seemed to me to be too many pieces and it was put together wrong from the factory i don't think i ever got it together right but i do know it NEVER worked right at all. The lee dies work perfectly and since it's for a lever gun i'd say go with the lee factory crimp die.

If you're asking about brand names one is about as good as the other.  I prefer RCBS then Lyman, Pacific or Redding.  Those three appear to be of equal quality to me.  C & H, (if they're still in business), makes a good set of dies.  There's nothing wrong with Lee dies, and I own three or four sets, but they're always my last choice if others are available.

Regarding the crimp, a roll crimp is the way to go in my opinion.  Just roll it into the cannelure of the bullet you're loading.  I use a taper crimp on one smokeless cartridge I load for.  I use a light taper crimp on everything I load for my BPC rifles but they're all single shots.

I use RCBS. I mostly shot them out of a single shot, so I use a light roll crimp.  I use the Lee factory crimp die when I was shooting them out of my Marlin lever action.  :D

I use Hornady dies along with a Lee factory crimp die.  If you load Remington 405g bullets, the Lee FC die is a must.
Jackfish and some others, on the old Marlin Talk site put me on the FC dies some time ago...turned out to be good advise.

I use Lee and the Lee Factory Crimp Die. The Lee FCD does not come with the Lee dies so you would have to order separate but they are inexpensive around 12 bucks or less. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
