Removing breech plug from Lyman

I have  a Lyman trade rifle and have never removed the breech plug.. Is there anything special that I have to do?  What is the best way .??. I wanted to ask before I bugger it up because I missed something simple.

Why would you ever want to remove the breech-plug on your Lyman Trade rifle??

No reason to do it, wasnt designed for user removal.

Breech plugs are there for one reason. You need it to plug the end of the breech......

Leave it alone.  It is not a wear & tear item & you don't take them out & clean or etc. They go in  One Time, at the manufacturing plant.

If you have a dryball, wet powder, etc...  you pull the ball or shoot it out.

I have had some real challenges on some very old guns with plugged barrels or frozen nipples that refuse to budge. But, I have never,ever had to unbreach a gun yet. If it has fouling in it, just be patient with solvents and picking at it, you will get it. If not today, maybe next week.

Thanks for teh replies -I was just wondering if it needed to be done once a year or something..  Good that it does not..One less thing to worry about

You don't need to ever take them out unless it is a major problem. I have 2 doublebarrels here built in 1861 and they have never been out, have rifles built in the 60's 70's, 80's 90's none have been out.  Just no reason to remove them unless you have a major malfunction.

Just clean it well with good ol cold water & possibly a squirt of dishwashing soap in the water. get it really good & dry when done & use a good rust inhibitor & you will be OK.   :grin:
