Barrel Leading Problem Vaquero .45Colt
« on: March 22, 2005, 05:23:55 PM »
I am getting leading around the edge of the forcing cone and in the first inch of the barrel.
What would be causing this.
I have only fired 50 rd.
My Load:
New Starline Brass
200gr. Bear Creek .452
7.5 and 8.0 gr. Unique
OCL 1.585
Win. Primer

My Bore is .451
My Throats are .451

What do I need to change

Lead in the cone and first inch or so of the barrel is indicative of your powder charge burning the base of your slug, hot gasses getting past the slug will heat the sides so much that they are creating a condition nearly like soldering the bore near the cone!  What kind of slugs are you using? The use of a bevel based projectile will excaberate the problem! Best to stick with a flat based slug! Another possible solution would be to use a card wad under the slug to help prevent blowby from overheating the sides/base of the bullet.

Cuts Crooked:
I am using a flat base bullet .452
bore is .451 and throats are .451 so it Ain't blow by.
It is such a light load I wouldn't think it would burn the base :?
I'll give the Wad a try.

Thanks
  Sterling.

:D Well I got ahold of the local smith and I'm going to have the throats opened up and the forcing cone polished. After cleaning it was still there so I got some of that lead cleaning cloth and still had to scrub  ,
It was definatly lead not crud.
Also Gunn'a try some other bullets in the 250gr. range. with a traditional lube.

Thanks for your input.

Howdy Hylander,

If yer cylinder throats are tighter than bore diameter, you will get the same affect as if your powder was blowing by. This is because the slug is being "swaged" as it passes through the throat and is actually under sized when it hits the bore.  Light loads will increase this problem because the isn't enuff ooomph there to cause the bullet to "slug up" to near bore diameter and gasses will blow by and melt the lead creating that soldering effect!

Generalizations about barrel leading:
Leading near the forcing cone is usually caused by blow by.
Leading near the muzzle...inadequet lube.
Leading the full length of the bore...under sized bullets, inadequet lube, too soft projectile, rough bore, or any combination of the thereof.

These are not hard & fast rules, but are a good place to start looking, depending on which problem presents itself! Sounds like your smith has a handle on the problem. Hope that iron gives ya good service from her eon out, Pard! :-)
