Biggest gripe I've heard is that it does't meter as well through the measurer. I'm using IMR4198 in a rifle chambered for .221 fireball.

I`ve been reloading since 1965 and have used about every kind of powder on the market and some that aren`t on the market any more. I`ve shot alot of IMR over the years and it`s like all the rest, they have some powders that fit my need and some that just don`t work in what I load. I have never found their powders to be of any better or any worse quality than any of the other well known powder manfactures.

With the exception of Norma 205, when it was avaliable and a case of frustration's with Accurate 2700 I got for free, I've never used anything but IMR and Hodgon. My 6.5-06 like's IMR 4350 and my 243 like's IMR4064. My 25-06 likes H4831. I don't experiment a lot as I tend to just go with what work's anymore.

IMR powders, now owned by Hodgdon, is an excellent powder.  There new IMR 7828SSC(Super Short Cut) is a great addition to their line.  I am working on loads now using this powder in all of my magnum cartridges..  The SSC should measure very well thru all measures.  Also, should increase the powder capacity to a certain extent.  The old IMR 7828 was the old stand-by in magnum cartridges and the new IMR 7828SSC version should be even better.  Lawdog

I think a lot of the issue of IMR not being talked about much is because the people that use it usually have nothing to complain about!

The list of IMR powders I have on hand right now are:
IMR 4227, 4198, 4895, 4320, 4064, 4350, and 7828

I use these powders regularly!

I also use Alliant and Accurate Arms Powders!

I use IMR powders where they are applicable.  If my best accuracy and downrange energy is found with IMR (or Hodgdon, Alliant, Winchester, etc.), then that is what ends up in the cartridge.

For me it isn't a matter of brand loyalty or preference in metering, but all about what performs best in each cartridge.

There isn't much controversy in consistent performance.  Not many talk about the IMR powders, just like not many talk about the .30-06.

25-06 gets a dose of 56.5 grains of IMR 4350 under a 75 g V-Max.

This load shoots under MOA and is great for reaching out n touching somthing. Any groundhog out to 400 yards is usually toast in one shot and anything past that may need a little figurin'.

Just wandering like Tomaldrige said not many people talk about them because it just works. I have been using them for about 20 years 4198,3031,4064,4350,4831. I sure hope Hodgdon doesn't try to change things on us.

I've used IMR powders for over 30 years and never had occasion to try any others. They are readily available in this area, along with the fine Hodgdon products which I have also used with good results. Once I have worked up loads I am reluctant to switch powders. If it works, don't fix it.
There are lots of fine powders out there, but IMR has always done the job.

I've used nothing but IMR powders. Put a lot of 4350 through a 30-06 and a bunch of 4831 through a 7mm mag. They were and are excellent powders and I'm working up new .243 loads using IMR 7828. Hodgdon owns IMR and Hodgdon has developed powders under its label which are not temperature sensitive and that is a selling point. I plan to see what H4350 does in my '06 and may switch if the results are good. But, there's nothing wrong with the IMR powders.

I have used IMR powders and find them okay for accuracy but most of the time a pain to get through the powder measure.  I'm partial to Hodgdon powders which always seem to be shorter grained and meter much nicer.

I have tried IMR4064 in 308 Win and it works well.  Too hard to meter though.  Varget is much nicer to use and just as accurate.

I've used IMR 4350 in 3006 but again, H4350 performs about the same with shorter grains.

IMR 4198 is pretty good in .223 but Varget, H322, or BLC-2 meters much better and shoots great.

Also, there's just nothing better for 25/06 than H4831SC for 100+ grain bullets.  So nice to load as compared to IMR 4831.

IMR powder is good stuff, but I just prefer Hodgdon's.  Maybe since Hodgdon now owns IMR, they will apply some of their talent to making the IMR's more user friendly.  I've also had good results with Alliant Reloader 7, 15, & 19

My 2 cents.

I reload for 13 rifle calibers and use virtually all of the IMR powders and have for many years now.  I may use Varget or Reloder-19 with some calibers, but the IMRs are my mainstays.  In an emergency I could get away on IMR4064 and IMR4895 for the vast majority of my shooting.  Best wishes.

I think the shooting writers have influenced the powder use through the years. When I began loading the 243, Warren Page was the spokesman. He used IMR4064. I did and have used it since. Today IMR4895 and Varget work in my 243.

When developing a load I like to ask old timers what they use. This has saved a lot of time. Recently I wanted a good load for my 22/250 with a Hornady 52gr A-Max. An old shooter said 36.5gr of IMR4320. The accuracy is great.

I do think metering is a benefit of other powders. If I am loading volume for 223, I use H322. If I am just enjoying the single load measuring, it doesn't matter. Case capacity and bullet weight and style are components to consider. I like to call bullet manufaturers when I am stuck on what to use. It is a hobby..So enjoy. JV.

Just my .02 for what it's worth, if i could only have one powder for my center fire rifles it would be IMR 4895 .

I use it for my .223 / 22-250 / .243 / 30-30 /.270 /.308 / 30-06 and 7mm mag.

I have good luck with Imr powders. Four IMR powders that worth having, meaning they cover a good range of caibers are 4350/4831/4064 & 4198 I have used  4350 and in 338win,300 win mag & 25-06,  4831 in my 7mmrem mag, 4064 in 30-06, 35 whelen & 243win. 4198 in 222rem.Take those four powder's and add RL-22,19,15 & 7, along with H4831sc,H322 and Norma MRP. If I can't get 90 % of rifle's to shoot with those powders, it's not going to shoot.

Why more reloaders don't use IMR powders is probably related to their being a bit harder to meter in most if our powder dispensers.  By and large I seem to get better accuracy from them than most powders.  Just one mans opinion.  Best wishes.

Very true.  But IMR(Hodgdon really) is listening to us reloaders.  Example is their new IMR-7828ssc(super short cut).  Meters great, packs better thus allowing room for more powder.  Really superior to the old stand by IMR-7828 in larger case cartridges.  Other ssc powders are coming according to IMR.  Lawdog

I would like to have a dollar for every can of IMR powder i have used since 1950, Don't think i could buy a casino in Vegas but sure could buy another Gun or two, Nothing wrong with IMR powder. All most all early powders were Gov. Surplus. When Hodgen powder started out in about 1947 they were handling All US Surplus Powder. They packed it in card board containers and sold in 1lb cans........Joe............

Hello 45-70,

You may have done well to save some of those IMR cans, sure wish I had.
I purchased a 1lb. can of IMR4350 last week and was surprised to find Hodgdon has switched the container to one exactly like it's other cylindrical plastic  powder containers.  Bye-bye metal, hello plastic,  best wishes.

I use IMR 4064 for all of my reloads.  22-250, 243, and 7mm-08 works really good in all of them and get around 1" groups at 100yds.  I don't really worry about the metering problem. I use a powder dropper, but weigh each load anyway and use a powder trickler.
