Cartridge suggestions for pig hunting
« on: March 23, 2005, 10:47:34 AM »
I want to set up my contender for pig hunting.  I was wondering what Cartridges People would suggest.  I am recoil sensitive so please keep that in mind.  I am leaning towards something in a scoped 14” barrel to aide in recoil and muzzle blast reduction.  I have dies and components for a .44 mag, but I sold my super black hawk and bought a 7mm TCU contender.  I felt much more confidant with the contender since it was more pleasant to shoot.  I am thinking of a 35 Remington, but I don’t know what the recoil will be like.  Life is so much harder when you are a wimp.

7-30 waters is hard to beat in a 14 inch barrel.  You know you've shot it but I don't think it would be too much recoil wise.

if you didnt like the 44 blackhawk, you sure aint going to like the 35 remington.  i had one in a 14 inch barrel and that darn thing kicked as hard as my 454.    the only thing i didnt try was a pachmayer decellerator grip.  i have a 30-30 barrel now. and a decellerator grip, and it is a breeze to shoot.  maybe it was the hard composite grip that made the 35 so mean.   i dont know, but it could be.   i know the 35 can be really finicky to reload.  i do love the caliber, though.

like i said in your other post,  7-30 or the 30-30.   with spire point bullets, the 30-30 is really a whole 'nother cartridge.

357 MAX,  41 MAG,  44 MAG,  45LC,  454,  30-30 AND a plethera of other cartridges will take care of hoggs if loaded properly form your contender. If you know someone that has one in one of the above calibers shoot it with some hunting loads and see for yourself. We can all give our opinion but when it comes to recoil there is only one way to find out what you can take.
I know a couple of people that just can not take the recoil of hunting loads due to injurys and have gone the short barrel lever gun route.

Go with the 44 MAG, you already have what you need to get started reloading. I think the 35 Remington will be more than you want.  :D

I'm going to have to vote for the 30/30.I'v got that exact set up and it works great on hogs, and like someone said it's a completely different cartridge with pointy(ok they didn't say pointy) bullets.SGB
