DEER HUNTING W/7.62X39

Just wondering if anyone uses or has used this cartridge to harvest deer. I have a T/C Encore in 7.62x39 with a .308 bore so I,m going to handload for it . I should be able to get a little over 2400 FPS with a 125gr or 130 gr spitzer bullet. On paper it looks good to say 125 yards , but I'd like some first hand knowledge.

I shot a nice buck in '98 with handloads.  It is the minimum that I would use.  I think your range limitation is about right.

I have cleanly taken a few deer with an SKS 7.62x39 using Winchester 123 gr. Super-X Soft Point ammo. This was my first centerfire rifle and it served me well until I saved up enough $ to get a .270. They went straight down when hit in the shoulder all shots were under 100 yards.

I've shot several w/ a SKS as well.  Mine were taken at 50 yds and less using the Barnaul hollowpoints.  Some folks here will naysay the HP's, but between me and several friends, we've had great results w/ them...

I have taken deer and hogs with my mini30 in 7.62x39 using 123gr Winchester softpoint. From what I understand the 7.62x39 compares to the 30-30 Win. but has a more aerodynamic (pointed) bullet. I use the mini30 for stalking in thick bush which we have here in Northeast Florida. Also use only open sights cause the mini30 doesn't like scopes.

I wouldn't use one if I had something with a little more punch. If thats all a guy had and you don't push the range, they would work.

:cb2: Personally I don't use mine for anything bigger than coyotes, but that said, there have been many a deer taken with lever guns not as powerful as the classic .30-30. So as long as the gun is accurate enough to put the bullet where ya want it to go, and that's all ya got, why not?

My cousin's BIL has an SKS that he has gotten deer with the last couple years, so it's worked out well for him. Both deer were shot at <100 yards. Soft point ammo of some kind.

I got my first 2 with that round out of my AR with factory Remington ammo. Both were put on the shoulder, and both went down like cow tipping without much movement after. I am hoping to handload w/ 150 gr. tripple shocks for 2006 season.

I noticed that Federal has a 123 gr 7.62x39 soft point in their PowerShok line, but I have not tried it yet. To be honest the only thing I have shot at this point with my Mini-30 or SKS is paper.

I have a SKS that has killed a few whitetails,  I mainly use it as a loaner gun and it has done very well out to 100 yards.  Makes a great brush/woods gun in a pinch.  Its really nice for deer drives.

Before you reload the 7,62x39 try the 154gr wolf ammo I heard its very accurate.  The 154gr bullet does up the performance of the 7,62x39.

I fired this group the other day thru my 527 carbine in 7.62x39. With wolf 154 grain soft points no less. Range was 100 yards. At the start of the shooting session the wind was variable. But then it settled into a steady 10 to 15 mph cross wind and i shot this group thru it.


.627-.310=.317 "3 shot group!!! Shocked



I'll just have to give up on developing a hunting load there's no way i can improve on this. Velocity or accuracy wise. The wolf ammo chronographed at an average of 2185fps

I smoked a big Texas Doe with my Mini 30. 21 yards right thru the heart. I bet she only ran 15 yards. 7.62X39 is plenty for deer.
