Trigger and FL Sizing Question
« on: March 24, 2005, 02:38:25 PM »
I bought two new Ruger Rifles lately and really like them.  Accuracy is very good. My 25.06 has a 5.5 lb trigger and I would like to change for a n aftermarket trigger.   Which leads me to one of my questions.  Is the warranty affected when poeple change the factory triggers out?

Also when I run myonce fired brass thru my Lee Full Length Die and do the book trim. I have a very hard time closing the bolt. I can neck size and of course the case functions perfectly.  What could this FL Die be doing to my case?

My guess is that it is not setting the shoulder back. When you full length size, the case becomes longer as its sized and then the shoulder needs to be set back to accommodate the growth in length. If the die is made on the long side of tolerance and your chamber is on the short side it could be causing an interference. I assume you are setting the die to hit the top of the shell holder when you size. If not you need to set it deeper until you can chamber a sized case. If its hitting the shell holder already you need to call Lee and get a new die. Hope this makes sense.   KN

This may sound like a stupid question but are you cleaning your brass? I know a guy that wasn't cleaning his brass and had the same problem. He went as far as buying a set of small base dies and they didn't fix the problem. He got a tumbler and all was well again. He had loaded for several other rifles before running into the problem. I don't think changing the trigger will affect the warrenty but I've heard if you send your rifle back to Ruger they will take your after market trigger off and install one of theirs.

Thanks for the replies.  I worked on the problem today and found that it was indeed the shoulder set back.  I was going strickly by the instructions on setting the die and did not go past the 1/8 to 1/4 turn statement.  I also noticed that I had to go even further with nickel plated brass.  Both dies are set up for the Rugers now.

As far as the triggers I will have to remember to take the Timney's out if I have to return for any reason!

Might also try lubing the expander die.  I use mica now, but have used regluar case lube, then cleaned afterwards.  You can also use baby powder in the place of the mica
