I finally fell to temptation and bought a norinco paratrooper sks. I've looked at all the ballistic data on the cartridge BUT when I went to norma's site they advertise a 180 grain soft point at 1575 fps. That seems like an awful hot load. Safe in the sks? Thanks for the help.
I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on; I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them.

Welcome to the sks club as you will find out once you shoot it you will see that you may collect more sks's down the road too. I would stay away from the hotter norma ammo.  I may try the Wolf 150gr Soft Point ammo that ups the performance really solid into the 30-30 range. The paratrooper is a neat little sks and i'm sure you'll enjoy it.   BigBill

My first advise to anyone getting there first sks or for each sks they purchase is give it a real G.I. cleaning before you shoot it.  Take the bolt apart and clean out the firing pin and the bore in the bolt for it too.  Make sure its squeeky clean.  And make sure the gas tube and inside the reciever is clean too.  I have purchased many so called used sks's that were still new looking that had cosmoline still in them.  Just lubed the reviever and bolt carrier and the bolt with gun grease or moly and leave the firing pin dry. I like to put a little moly on the gas piston/tube too.  Many sks owners will argue that point but there has been many yugo sks's with worn out gas systems. This gun will give you many years of dependable and reliable service.  Just keep it cleaned and lubed and its better than the energizer bunny!!!!

The SKS is to us, what the M1 Carbine was to our parents, only better.

The M1 Carbine was a very handy "truck gun."  It was something that you could use to shoot a coyote and wouldn't hurt your shoulder.  It was a pleasure to shoot and plink with.

The SKS will do all of that, plus it is a reasonable deer rifle if you keep shots at 100 yards or less and know how to use it.

The SKS is so inexpensive and yet so good in so many ways.

I have two.  One is tricked out with red dot sight, Choate stock, and a bunch of stuff.  The other is military stock.

Let's be reasonable.  I am a "mild" gun nut and I have two SKS rifles.

I will wager that BigBill has more than one SKS.

Most folks I know who start with one SKS, end up getting another one pretty soon, even if it is just to use for parts, if at some time the first one wears out.

 :D

Come on now BigBill......a "gun nut ...have one..."   That is like asking someone to eat just one potato chip.

I think you would be surprised to how many guys who are into guns don't have an sks and mainly because they think there junk.  They just don't have a clue what its all about.  If you can remember what it was like with your very first 22lr semi-auto rifle, its about the same feeling just but with more bang!!!!!!  I just think every gun guy should have at least one sks!!!
Once you shoot it you have to have more than one right?  Heck with so many countries who made them you have to have one from each country too once your hooked on them too!!!!!   There just so affordable and down right cheap right now how can you not have at least one?   Don't call me cheap i'm FRUGAL !!!!!!!!!!                                      BigBill

I can remember getting my very first Chinese Norinco sks, a co-worker who had his FFL01 told me i had to have one and after shooting it he was correct but we all know that  "just one" isn't enough!  You can never have too much of a good thing!!

Hey SKS Freakos!!!
How do you live with that dern folding stick bayo on the end?  I think that bothers me enough to never want one...and I'll just keep waiting for my little M1 Carbine........Carried one on guard duty many hours on the launch-site line.  Now, I'm not closed minded...... just not sure about the pig-sticker thingy.  Does it shoot OK if it were removed?

Jim

YES you can remove the bayonet, its ok to, it will still shoot good too with it removed.  But when your out varmit hunting with it you can skew the noisy chipmunks with it because its very quiet so you don't scare the wabbits. (kidding)
Your kidding me you don't have one???  Come on with all the cheap yugo's you should at least have one yugo M59???? Get both a shooter grade yugo 59/66 and a yugo M59!!!!! I'll bet if you had one and shot it you would have a few right after.  Thats what i mean there's a lot of gun nuts who don't have an sks yet!!!!!    I think there should be a law that every household should have one sks in it to protect this country if need be.  I can't protect this country by myself.                                                                BigBill

You missed the chinese, the russian, the romanian, the albanian and yopu may miss out on the yugo sks's too???

You would have a hard time buying a 22 rimfire from Wally-World that cost less than an SKS. I bought a "unissued" Yugo for around $140 and it looks to be in the same shape as any new gun that I have ever bought.

I've heard know-it-alls talk about the SKS being "junk" as if they were too good to  touch a "cheap" gun and Bill is right, they completly miss the point. The SKS is a work of genius, a completly reliable semi-auto that can be built cheaply and quickly with the most basic tools and the most basic skills. Sure it looks cheap. It is cheap. That's the whole point. And it works. Remember the old ad where the distributor claimed to have watched workers assembling the rifles in China? As each was completed the worker would heave it across the room into a big pile and start on the next. I like that story.

An M1 Carbine vs. SKS would make for an interesting heads-up comparison test.  My guess is the M1 would come out ahead for overall handiness, reloading speed, and sights.  SKS would win hands down for power, accuracy, price, and cheap ammo!

SKS & Mosin
« Reply #13 on: April 08, 2005, 05:42:00 PM »
I have a yugo 59/66 and a mosin 91/30 bought both unissued and are very clean and very fine shooters. I like the SKS for plinking and the mosin for serious distances, am currently looking at scoping the mosin with an s&k mount to tighten things up a little. I'll pull the muzzle loader out when I want to make some big smoke. In the end, Have Fun with anything that goes bang or boom!

Excellent rifles
« Reply #16 on: April 19, 2005, 01:41:27 AM »
As a collector of milsurp and other rifles I have had occassion to shoot and own a lot of rifles over the years. The SKS and AK's are excellent firearms. They have good knock down power. The ammunition is cheap. They are not overpriced like Garands and carbines. The action is much simpler than the American rifles and less prone to operational difficulties.
At this point I no longer own a Garand or an M-1 carbine but do have and shoot my Yugo SKS and Romanian WASR10 quite often.
The American rifles are grossly overpriced and less dependable than the SKS or AK.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

Yes AK's and SKS's are simpler lower priced than US milsurplus guns.
but there are a couple exceptions,, one is the Russian SVT ,, Russias
first attempt at a semi auto battle rifle.. complicated gas system
and somewhat fragle in untrained hands..

The SVT-40 had a first shot cold barrel problem too with accuracy thats why the 91/30 surpassed it in the sniper weapons and use.  The only other problem was the troops were never trained on how to keep the semi auto maintained over the bolt action too.  The one i have has never quit yet and it handles like an sks but it throws the 7,62x54 round out the pipe. But you must adjust the gun to the ammo your using too.(gas valve) I think the SVT-40 was a has been before it was off the assembly line meaning it got less popularity as time went on. I wish i had an SKS41 they were in 7,62x54 but there were never produced.            BigBill

But the Germans who captured them loved them because they knew how to maintain them.  There are many pictures of Germans using captured russian svt-40's.   The Finn's also captured them too.

I didn't think much of the SKS at first, but it has earned my respect.  I now have five of them.  One looks like it could have been used as a fence post, but it still shoots good.  That's my truck gun, it most always is with me when I'm out at the farm.  Most of the ranchers and farmers in my area got away from the old Winchester 30-30 and are now packing an SKS with two 30 round mags.  Sure makes a difference when facing a pack of wild dogs or a pack of illegals.................

I would hunt for one in your local pawn shops they have been my favorite place to find hardley used sks's that are affordable.  Anyone of the sks's will perform very well.  While the russians are considered the top of the line the chinese are a very close second in quality and towards the end I think the chinese passed the russians and manufactured the overall best quality sks.  The Romanian sks , the Albanian sks  and the Yugo sks  i'm sure will serve you well too.  But I wouldn't pass on any of them but if i had my choice getting one it would be a Chinese sks.

One too look for is called a Sino Soviet SKS this is a gun that was built by the Chinese when Russia went there to teach them how to build them. These were built with russian parts and assembled by the chinese.  The serial number is a letter followed by "4" numbers like P1234 is the first sign of a sino soviet sks.  For more info go to; www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Gorge/4653/sinosov.htm
My point is a russian sks may cost you more dollars but if you find a sino soviet you can have a russian sks for a chinese price.

When you first get your sks give it a good cleaning because some don't clean them well.  I have found some of the used ones still had cosmoline inside the recievers and gas system.  And remember to take the bolt apart and clean the firing pin bore and pin because it will be full of crud even though the firing pin may seem free this crud can cause the firing pin to stick at anytime and cause slam-fires.  Then just lube the bolt carrier, bolt and gas piston with a little gun grease or moly and your good to go.  These guns are better than the energizer bunny they just keep on running and running they just don't quit!!!!!!!  These still are the most bang for our buck fun we can get.  And it should be a law that everyone here should own at least one!!!!!!  You just have to fire one to know what i'm talking about.                                                         BigBill

I didn't think too much of it either until i shot one and now we can use the cheap 122gr FMJ and 122gr Hollow Point bullets we also have the Wolf 154gr soft point ammo which is cheap too which puts the sks dead in 30-30 country as a deer gun too and varmits of any size too.                                              BigBill

When I first learned about the SKS I was really interested in buying one and adding a 30 or 50 round mag and folding stock.

Then I stumbled across something on the web stating that if you bought a Mil-surp SKS and then slapped on an aftermarket stock or magazine you were comiting a NFA violation.

What exactly is the law on that?

If I buy an SKS and slap on aftermarket accessories with out proper paperwork will the ATF nail me?
