Whats the strangest military rifle you have ever seen?
« on: March 25, 2005, 02:45:45 AM »
For me it was the German Fliers Rifle  its an 8mm semi auto carbine that takes the MG13 25rd magazines.  I got to see one in a German Rifle Display at the Northeast Expo center at the Big E fair grounds in West SpringField, Mass.  Of course I can imagine the price of one if it was for sale.                                                                    BigBill

I would have to say that the guns they made (I think it was the Germans though others may have tried it too?) with the curved barrels to shoot around corners would have to qualify as "Strange" Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

The strangest weapon I own is an Egyptian Hakim semi-auto rifle in 8mm Mauser. The thing is huge and uses a strange Swedish system of operation. Mine dosen't shoot right and needs to see a gunsmith.

i own a Ljungmann, which your Hakim is a licenced copy of. mines 6.5x55. will only shoot handloads and milspec ammo. they use a direct gas system thats not adjustable so they are very picky about their food. for powders IMR3031 is best.

strangest i've ever seen is Berthier 1916. UG-LY!

Whats wrong with your Hakim???  I had 6 of them and they all worked flawlessly.  I also have one half sporterized in an oak thumbhole stock too which i have yet to finish.  Lets see if we can fix your hakim so whats wrong with it?  I also have a contact for Hakim parts too.  These are sweet hearts to shoot once there adjusted correctly to the ammo your using.  I turn the gas valve fully closed which is clockwise is "OFF",  then open it one click at a time counter clockwise till the bolt just stays open by firing one round at a time(last shot fired "empty mag" bolt locs open).  While its finiky with some ammo it sure is a smooth shooter once its set right.  I also remove the gas valve and clean out the port and use moly anti seize on the threads so it can't freeze up.  Since the gas tube is stainless and corrosive ammo won't hurt it, it can be cleaned out by using a pipe cleaner.  I put a wire rod thru mine to make sure its clean while the gas port screw is out.
There isn't much to this great swedish designed shooter.     BigBill

WARNING:  To all Hakim owners there has been accidents with the gas valve being too far open with certain ammo's.  While they say its an out of battery firing its really not, actually the bolt carrier is removing the empty bullet case before the bullet leaves the barrel thus hitting the shooter with the hot chamber gasses (the breech pressure).  This is happening when the valve is wide open and the bolt opens way too early.  This awesome 8mm shooter should not only be adjusted "once" to the ammo your using it "must be readjusted each time to change to a different brand of ammo"!!!!!

We must understand how each semi auto functions too.  The Egyptian Hakim,  Egyptian Rasheed,  SVT-40 Tokarev the gas valve adjusts and actually restricts how much gas works the system.   That means the less the valve is open the less gas the system sees. On the FN49 the gas valve adjusts how much gas is exhausted from the system.  On the FN49 the more the valve (gas port) is open its the less gas the system sees.  Its all about knowing which gun you have and how the gas system works.

On the Russian SVT-40 Tokarev the scribed lines on the gas valve must be lined up perfectly because the gun won't function if its not.  The gas ports in the SVT are very small holes so it has to be perfectly lined up.

Each gun adjusts in a different way and their actually opposite so care must be taken to understand which system you have.  These guns will work flawlessly and be more accurately too when their adjusted correctly.(less recoil)

Besafe adjust your semi auto correctly!!!!!

Just about anything the French came up with since the Franco-Prussian War!  Those French are so damn proud to have something of their own design that they ignore better designs all around them!

Ditto on the French, such as MAS 36.

(Obtained because of odd design and near perfect condition.  Their condition is often attributed to never being shot and only dropped once :^)

The French did make some weird and unique looking guns but the MAS 49 and MAS 49/56 are my favorites.  Their strangest looking beast of a rifle would have to be their semi-auto made in 1917.  I believe it was the first one to be used in battle but i'm not sure because the Mexicans had a semi auto rifle too in 7mm around that time too (I think)           BigBill

the mexicans had a semi auto at the turn of the century called the Mondragon. it could also funtcion as a straight pull bolt action.

Shorty they did not need anything good it was easier for them to surrender than to fight.

My vote for the strangest is the Aussie (or maybe Canadian?) semi-auto rifle made from the bolt-action Enfields.  Had a bulky receiver cover over the clunky action.  Even uglier than the French rifles.

Don't underestimate the MAS 36 or other French arms.  Sure, they are funny looking, particularly with that rakishly bent bolt, but they are very reliable and accurate too.  As for the MAS 49/56, one of the better designed semi-autos I have seen - exceptionally accurate as well.  A real bargain.

Here is a picture of my two MAS 36s:

Cheers,
Gary

These were droped over the Philipenes by the thousands. The had no real trigger but you just slamed it closed to fire. It was awful but it was cheap. If you tossed it in a pile of debris it would never be found. They were used to defend the islands by the natives. They comand premium prices a gun shows .. The strangest military gun IMO

In " Mauser Military Rifles of the World " there on page 159 is a German 13mm T-Gewehr. These anti-tank rifles always blow me away in their size. I can't get over how huge these things are, as if made for giants.

Kinda reminds me of antique Punt guns.

Well, I got to see a picture of one that is strange only because its so rare. I think its been mentioned on here before, a whole slew of GIs that are barrel strokers have been drooling over it........in Iraq we captured, what I believe are TWO original German MP 44s. One is supposedly completely mint that was Saddams personal gun. The other is the one I saw a pic of one that has been referred to by several guys....... after 60 years someone was still using the thing!  Hopefully the Army will get these things to a good museum some where, as opposed to the unthinkable.
