Mitchell.
Spent some real money, mortgage your home etc and buy this Merkel, with the best single shot break open lock up. Only four grand that is for the plain jane.

And then there is the lowly 257 Handi, have to keep you guys riled up.

Hi All,

Well I must say that I do not normally like laminated wood, but just lately there seems to be some rather attractive laminated wood about. The Handi pictured is about the best looking one I have seen so far.

Now as for the Merkel, well I know that they have an excellent name, but I ahve never handled one and as I ahve fired a Chapuis double rifle in 8x57R and it was extremely accurate I would go with the Chapuis.

:) I agree that the 30-30 is not a 200 yard deer rifle....it is actually a little better than that.......last whitetail at 240 yards, NEF topped with 3x9 old Redfield, 150 grain CT-BST over a charge of W748.  Venison, smashed taters and grits on the side....rifle sighted in for 3" high at 100 yards.  Deer feeding, nice and calm in clover field.  Held on top of spine line and touched it off.  Hit a little higher than I thought it would but deer went down and staggered back up, walked twenty feet and fell down for good.   Bullet opened nicely and retained about 110 grain.  I also use the Hornady 150 grain Round Nose, which groups very nicely at 200 yards. The 30-30 might be overshadowed by many of the new calibers and loadings, but in the hands of a good rifleman, it will take any deer in North America.   This was the longest shot I have attempted with the NEF in 30-30, most of my shots have been under 125 yards from a tree stand.

Brithunter.
Since this is a bulletin board that is dedicated to the NEF/H&R firearms one rarely sees any other rifles discussed. Nevertheless it is refreshing to few some of the finer SS rifles.

The Chapuis, Merkel, Blaser, Ferlach do not even closely compare with the Handi rifle, dolled up or otherwise. But then the custom 257 above only cost me $700 Can. and it shoots as well as the more expensive SS rifles.

With a little know how this rifle can easily duplicated specially if you have access to a machine shop like I have. Tweaking a Handi to top accuracy
can be taxing, but this board has all the answers of how to do it.

Keep digging around here and you will find all sorts of goodies.

Quick:

A review I'm going to enjoy is one where the  130 grain Barnes Triple shock was loaded up...and fired thru our Handi's...I was checking the MPBR on a the 130grainer at 2600fps...for a 3" kill zone(yep...pretty small) it still gives a MPBR of 253 yards and a MPBR zero  of 215 yards with 1187Ft.Lbs. of energy...make it a 6" kill zone...the figures are MPBR of 307 yards...MPBR zero of 360 yards...and 1060 ft.lbs. of energy...I think only having a 3" climb  or 3" drop much better for a center hold on a deer at 250 yards....
