NEF 22-250 Stainless Sight-in
« on: March 26, 2005, 01:37:40 AM »
Hey all,

Took a quick trip to the range yesterday to sight in my virginal SB2 Handi in .22-250. It was hands down the easiest  initial sight-in I've done in years.

After a rough bore sight the fourth round (PMC 55gr HPBT) was centered on the 50 yard bull.

The next three rounds were at 100 yards and tweaked the scope in.

These are the 8th, 9th and 10th rounds through the rifle:

I'm very happy with a starting group of 0.74 and will improve this with load workup and some fore-end tuning.

The only disappointment (you knew there had to be one) is that my handloads wouldn't chamber. I suspect the cases (once fired federals from eBay) are a tad long. The shellholder for my case trimmer arrived yesterday so I'm going to trim them to 1.90" and try again.

I've got a bunch of 4064 in the cupboard. Any one have a favorite charge for a 50gr pill?

Good shooting,

Rick

I found the problem with the reloads.

The once fired brass must have been shot out of rifle with a chamber the size of Rosie's mouth.

By leaning on the sizing die it brought the area ahead of the web down to spec and the rounds chamber nicely now.

Nice shooting. I think you will do better with 50 grainers or less. Try Varget, or BLC-2 in that barrel. That's what I prerfer, but I've never tried what you're shooting. :D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

The 63 grain Sierra Semi Spitzer shoots great in the handi 223. You might try that for a heavier bullet. I have been using Varget but H380 was made for the 22-250.
shot placement is everything.

Thanks guys.

My groups opened up yesterday with my first handloads. They were Sierra 45 gr. spires over 35 & 36 grains of 4064 and Hornady 55 gr. spires over 37 gr. of H380.

Maybe I worked the brass to hard getting it to chamber or I could have had way to much coffee (a distinct possibility).

5 shot groups opened to just under 2" with some horizontal stringing.

The 45 gr Sierra over 36 gr. of 4064 shows promise. I will try it again now that the cases are formed to my chamber.

It's been hot and cold, myarmor.

I've shot a pound of H380 with 45, 50 and 55 grain pills, none of which grouped to my liking (read 2"- 3" groups @ 100 yds). I did two sets of 4064, no big improvement. Bought a set of Lee collet dies, nope. It's hard to chamber some of the neck sized cases.

Factory ammo? Shoots .75" - 1" no problem! A poster name vlad (on the handloading board) had better luck with varget, so a soon as my wife's not looking I'll pick up a pound of that. I've never had this hard a time working up a load, and with the 22-250's reputation as an easy handload round I was suprised.

But it is a matter of trial and error, so patience and perseverance will prevail.

Anyone with a good recipe for the 22-250 Handi, please chime in
