THE S&W Model 14!!!
« on: March 26, 2005, 12:28:30 PM »
Have seen some posts here regarding the Model 14, and just thought I would say something about them.
I've got a model 14 with the full lug barrel. Got it for Christmas back in 92. As a matter fact just got back from the range shooting it today.
I've put many thousands of rounds through it, and had zero problems. And as accurate a revolver as I've ever shot.
I sold some Smiths a couple of months ago, to get a Freedom Arms revolver, a 629 five incher and a 625 five incher. But I kept my Model 14 in 38 Special. It's a good gun just to spend a day at the range with, shoot a couple hundred rounds without getting the shakes like a magnum.
They are very accurate and very cost efficient.
I may get rid of other guns but I WILL keep the Model 14. I like mine that much.

I totally agree. I have one of the Model 14s with the lugged barrel and it is a real sweet shooter. It is not for sale, but I would also like to get an older one. A nice 38 Special target revolver is a wonderful thing. 8)  :lol:

I think of the 38 Special kinda like I do the 35 Remington in a rifle.  It's old, it's not glamorous, and the only people who love them are the ones who have them.  They tend to shoot them a lot, and get very proficient with them, which makes them more deadly than they already were.  No fancy "magnum" moniker, no sky-high pressures, just predictable, repeatable accuracy and good manners.  I load for about a dozen calibers, but for an afternoon of relaxing shooting, the 38 is still Special!

I have three,  they are my favorite.

You need the K-22/M17 next.

I would give a M17 and a M14 for a M16 in 32 long.

papajohn;

I agree with you 100%. The 38 Special and the 35 Rem. just get the job done period. No frills, just plain fun. In this day and time the old stuff is easily forgetten. I guess we just enjoy the simpler things in life.

HappyHunter;

Those 3 Smiths, you must have a lot of fun with them. Hope you find the Model 16 your looking for.

papajohn,

When I take newbies shooting for the first time, they see K-22's and K-38's.

They love the ease of hitting the mark with those guns.

Time after time they come back and ask where they can get one of those.  fortunately they are not all that hard to come by.  I will always pick up another shooter 14 for this reason.

It is important to cultivate new gun folk whenever we can.

Thank you for this attitude; I've moved around alot and too many times I have been to ranges where no one takes an interest in the new guy. I've been shooting for most of my relatively young life, but it seems as though fewer and fewer of the new generations are keeping alive the american culture of the gun. It's funny, I've been all around the world, and everyone outside America thinks everyone inside America owns, and routinely operates, a firearm of some kind. I think they watch too many Westerns ... I know I do :)

I have the 14 and 17 but sold my 16 about 4 years ago.  I never shot it and sold to a collector for a good price.  Seldom see one but if you do. it will be about 2 grand. if in real good condition.  May ne even higher than that now as I don't keep up with them like I used to.

I have a S&W14-3, 6"; with target trigger & hammer. I intalled a Wolf spring kit & Pachmayer presentation grips. It is the most accurate revolver I own & a treasured item that I could never sell.

I once briefly owned a Model 14 that had been rebarrelled with a 4" bull barrel from a Model 10.  The intent at the time was to develop some sort of a bowling pin gun with wadcutters.  Ah well...

Anywho, this was one sweet shooting S&W.  Every single load we put down that barrel grouped inside an inch at 25 yds.  It was so accurate you got bored shooting it.

A hunting buddy was so impressed with it he bought a Model 14, used it for a number of years and finally put it back in his safe when he heard they weren't going to make that model any longer.

I think that of all the K-Frame Smiths I have shot, that is probably the sweetest.  Mikey.

:cb2: I agree with what everone has said about the S&W .38s. Found a 4 in. pencil barrel M10 P&R (1966) at a local dealer for $175. It looked like it came right out of the box. I already had six .357s and couldn't imagine why I would need a .38 Special. Everytime I looked at that thing it called to me. I finally went ahead and got it, thinking that I would sell it to a friend who was looking for a good cheap gun. Well . . . after the first time I took it to the range I knew this one would never be for sale. Hated the square little S&W grips and put Hogues on it. Man, what a shooter! Needless to say, I have my eyes open for deals on .38s.
