At the range today I chronograped a couple of 45-70 loads. Both loads were with the 500 grain RN Government bullet from Montana Swaging. The first load was with 28.0 grains of Accurate 5744. CCI mag primer. Bullet seated just past the top lube ring. This load was consistant and averaged 1294 fps. This is a trapdoor lever load but its stiff with the 500 grain bullet.

The second load was the same bullet, same primes and same seating depth. It was however loaded with 65 grains by Volume of Goex 2F. This load was a bit easier on the shoulder but not MUCH. It averaged 1178 fps. This load was compressed about .035. Then topped with a .020 cardboard wad and a newsprint wad over that. These loads were fired from the 32 inch barrel of the BC.

Did you fire any groups or just chronying?

Do you have to get further away when shooting the black stuff?

Didn't fire any groups today. Gusty wind and a little cold. I wondered if the wads would screw up the chronograph reading but it didn't seem to. It sometimes messes up when I shoot the muzzle loaders through it. I have the machine about 15-20 feet away. Even with trapdoor level loads those 500 grain bullets get your attention. :lol:

I started out in the Black powder with a couple bags of new Winchester Brass. I have heard that the Winchester brass holds a bit more powder. I don't know if thats true or not. I didn't drill out the primer flash holes yet. I have heard mixed reports on doing so. If I do it won't be much just enough to uniform them. I am new to the black powder cartridges. Except for revolver.

How do you like the Montana Swaging bullets? I don't think they have "Gas Checks", I don't know if that is plus or minus. I should start another thread to ask that. Mike.

FWIW, I've shot some of the MPS cast bullets in my 45-120, both with 41gr XMP5744 and with 95gr ff T7, they left a fair amount of lead in my BC's bore. I've also shot quite a few gas checked 405gr and 460gr Cast Performance WLNGC & WFNGC bullets using 43gr XMP5744, with no leading at all. The 460gr shot groups of 1½" at 92yds..... :grin:

I have not really shot them enough to have a good opinion. They have not leaded my barrel much but I am a bit under 1200 fps.
