300 win mag.Is it 3in high at 100 yds to get the maximum range without hold over.

reyn 61, it depends on what weight bullet and which load you are using.
If you go to this link you can download a really neat FREE program that will show you what you need to know. (if your using Remington ammo) Even if your using another brand of ammo. it will still give you a very good idea what your looking at. Hope this helps.

I sighted in my 300 Win Mag for 1 inch high at 200 yards. I don't worry about hold over to 350 yards.

The rule of 3 is a good place to start...and you can also download a program called Point Blank..to calculate your trajectories and energies a-lot better than just 1 paticular ammo maker...you can get it here...http://www.huntingnut.com/index.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=2

Here it is.

180 gr Nosler partition @ 3100 fps (Nosler data, not mine)
Ballistic coef. .474
Standard atmos. ( not sure what that is. You want something else, this won't change much)

sight height 1 1/2"
vital zone @ 8" (bullet will never rise above nor fall below line of sight more than 4')

Max point blank range 339 yds
Max point blank zero 291 yds
@ 100 yds 3.1" high
@ 200 yds 3.6" high
@ 300 yds 1/2" low

Now , if you were to sight in 1" high @ 200 yds with this same data, You'd be 9.6" low @ 350 yds. If that's a deer, good chance you'll shoot under it.

The old "3 inches high at 100 yards" rule of thumb is great for any big game gun. Longer point blank range for the calibers that have the power to kill at long range, and shorter point blank for those that don't. And not much chance of overshooting. "Elegant", as the physicist would say. And for varmint guns, 1-1/2 inch high at 100 works pretty well.
