scope mount solution?
« on: March 27, 2005, 04:30:06 PM »
I searched back through the messages and found little on scope mounting on 15-2. I already have a B-square clamp on, which works fine, but it is heavy, clumsy and ugly. B-square used to sell a screw-on, but I haven't seen that lately. I haven't been able to locate anything else.

Has anyone found a better solution than the B-square clamp-on mount?

You can get a really low profile steel  mount from the factory, but you must drill and tap the barrel shroud.  There are very light Weaver style mounts with a flat base that can be mounted by drilling and tapping as well.  Someone made a set of rings that clamped directly to the vent rib, with no separate mount. To the best of my recollection, this was a 3 ring system.  These ring systems pop up occasionaly, but rarely on the used market.  Aimpoint makes a mount that is sort of a compromise.  The front on the mount clamps onto the vent rib, while the rear of the mount screws into the sight adjustment hole of the rear sight (of course you have to drift the pin and remove the rear sight.  This will give you a sturdy mount that is lighter and also better balanced than the B-Square because it is mounted further back toward your hand.  The big disadvantage is that you have to remove the rear sight from the gun to use it and you have to unscrew the back of the scope mount to change barrels.  I just bought one of these Aimpoint mounts of ebay for $18.50 including shipping.  I see them fairly frequently on ebay.com, gunbroker.com, and/or auctionarms.com.  I think there is one up on one of those sites right now for around $12.00, but I can't remember which one.

Those are the main options available for scope mounts on the Dan Wesson.

Was covered in this forum, a while back, including pics. The clamp on version is no longer made, the D&T is.

Beg to differ, Wiley... B-square still sells clamp-on but drill and tap no longer sold. Check out their site.

As far as the topic being covered, most of the previous posts discuss mounts that are now discontinued.

I just missed buying a pair of discontinued Leupold rings that fasten directly to vent rib, but just bought an Aimpoint mount that requires removal of rear site. Also bought a Burris mount that requires drill and tap but fastens to barrel rather than frame.  Maybe I'll go with one of these. Thanks for help.

The Burris clamp on is still there, and pictured on a 445 SM

Here is a picture of my 445SM with the mount from DW. Drilled and tapped from DW when I ordered the 10" barrel. I had a Burris clamp on and it two seemed bulky and hard to use.

Couldn't get your link to work.

In Wiley's post there's alink to what appears to be a Burris clamp on that you talk about also, but Burris doesn't list this anymore; only drill and tap version.

The burris clamp-on looks much less bulky and clumsy than my B-Square clamp-on, but doubt that I'd be able to find one.
