S&W model 629, 6" barrel topped with a Ultra Dot red dot, packed in a Bandido holster with American Eagle 240 grain jacketed hollow points.

That is how I hunt deer

I hunted with my SW 500-8-3/8'  this year and got 2 deer,I used a cast 400gr WFNGC at 1500 fps,I do like the triggers on SW's.
I also tried my SW 44 PC Light Hunter using 290gr WFNGC at 1400 but did not see anything when deer hunting

I usually pack along one of two S&Ws - either a 3.5" M27 or a 4" M29.  The M27 prefers 200 gn swcs over a WW296 powder charge and the M29 prefers a 295 gn swc over a charge of H-110.  Mikey.

The one that's not in the vault but in my safe at home. A S&W M657 Mountain Gun .41Magnum of course. I'm using the Speer 210gr. Gold Dot at 1250fps for deer, antelope, coyote, etc. The rest of the time it an OM Ruger Blackhawk in .41Magnum.

My first handgun deer was killed 01JAN1991 with my very first hunting handgun a S/W 657. Today my gun vault holds a Clements worked 657 that my granddaughter uses as her # 1 hunting gun, there is also my 657 PC Hunter and son#2 has my first 657 and a 57. Son#2 and granddaughter both use my old hunting load of a Sierra 210g/19.5/2400. I now use a CPBT 250g GCWFN/17.5/2400 as my kill everything load in all my .41s’. That load is pleasant and safe to shoot in my Smiths, mild in my Rugers and the FAs that live here but turns into a real beast in my Contenders. That load clocks from 1147 in the 57 to 1683 in my BullBerry 14 inch Contender over my Chrony Bata Master at 15 feet.
Love those .41s'

Yep, 629 Classic with an Ultra red dot, glass sight. Illinois opened up firearms season to handgun two years back. Don't have one here in Illinos yet but will try again this season, God willing?

I have used a Model 29 both with and without a scope, a Model 686 that was scoped, a 1950 Target .44 Special, and a Model 28 loaded with homemade 38/44 ammo ( I just love deer hunting with a "38 Special").  Used 240 XTPs and 240 cast in the 29.  Everything else was cast bullets.

Since I have not yet bought the S&W of my dreams (4" nickel plated 29-2) my Anaconda and Contender are forced to handle the hunting chores.

Not a problem, just make the check out to me and leave the amount blank, I'll fill it in? Of course I'll ship a soon as the check clears the bank?

HappyHunter, what's WFNGC? These acronyms are getting the best of my mastery of the English language.

« Reply #23 on: April 22, 2005, 04:32:14 PM »
My S&W 610 (10mm) is currently only slated for varmint hunting.  It was originally planned for deer hunting with a scope.  Unfortunately, it was recently replaced for the deer role with a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 45 Colt.   A LER Scope is still on the "to get" list for the Smith.

happyhunter - where do you get your wfngc 200 gn bullets for the 357.  I don't cast out and have been looking for a good supplier of the 200 gn 357 slug.  Do you get yours from Beartooth Bullets (they sound like some of Marshall Stanton's creations) or somewhere else.  Thanks.  Mikey.

Hey Mikey,

I get all my hardcast bullets from Midway USA, they are made by Cast Performance.

What velocity do you get? What kind of animals have you shot with this bullet? And the result?

Honesty time....I have only shot deer with the 44 and 41 mag in these bullets, all others have been along on various hunts as backup but have not seen a kill.

The 300 grain 44 was not recovered, and the same with the 255 grain 41 mag.  The kill was tremendous on the 41 with doe dropping in her tracks with an 85 yard shot.  The 44 was about a 65 yard run before pile up.  I do not have a chronograph so speeds are not known.   I have been wanting a chronograph...maybe for CHRISTmas.

There is a web site for cast performance.  It  lists products and load data, but I don't believe they list speed either.  http://www.castperformance.com/?uid=170&page=1648

Any of you use Laser-Cast bullets to hunt with? I've got good accuracy from them in my .357; they're very hard and don't come apart unless you go to maximum loads. I got the best accuracy from 158gr RNFP at 14.8gr of 2400. Started to spit lead at 15.3 grains, so I backed off. Would like to try them as hunting loads, so I'm curious as to how they perform on game.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...
