Help! I need silence please...What hearing protection do you
« on: March 29, 2005, 05:39:15 AM »
What hearing protection do you use? I need COMPLETE silence.. I know I need to work past it, but I am part ADD I guess, I can't concentrate why the shooter next to me has 3 spoters and starts an arguement with all 3 of them (esp the one behind the spotting scope) saying his shot hit right or not left...Bang..my shot missed b/c my mind is on his miss.

What type of plugs/ muffs do you use? I don't care if I can hear anything other than the range commands (and they better be loud). Something good hearing isn't all it's cracked up to be...

Please advise with brands, where to aquire some, etc.

Thanks,

Chicken George

George,
I think you need to work on your concentration a bit.  It's too dangerous to be so isolated at the shooting line that you can't hear anything around you.  Hell, I worry enough for both of us that I won't hear Range Commands or other shooters when I'm on line during non-events and we're all assuming our own responsibilties for range safety!!!  I prefer to use electronic muffs that allow conversations to be heard for that reason.
Ordinary full earmuffs that you can pick up at any gun counter should do a good job as far as hearing protection is concerned....but check the "db" level printed on each and every one you look at to compare.

Chicken,
Go to a hearing aid shop and get a molded set of swimmers ear plugs, cost about 70 buck custom made for your ear. Takes about 2 weeks to get but they have a mold to make the next set from.

never leave home with out them especially if Deason or duckgumbo is your roomy. Duckgumbo snores on his stomach, never seen that before or since.

for highpower i wear plugs and muffs.  jim is right.  check the db level for your gear.  also...  tell two of the three spotters next to you to go sit down.  politely ask is, perhaps, more in the spirit of some of our more delicate colleagues.  :)

and yes...  if you can't shut that noise out it typically means you have even more noise going on in your head.  you will be more successful working on your own concentration and methodology.  a shooter and spotter combo from texas make more noise than a flock of geese with a coyote come a callin.  if you can't block that out you are done before they say go!

You know that those of us from Texas are just so friendly that we have a need to communicate...  :D

Ernie...  I do know that and have to say I've been on the receiving end of some of that spotting communication over the years.  To extremely excellent results I might add.  My problem is when you boys get to yakkin and telling jokes, i'm always leaning out of my stance trying to hear the punch line while i'm trying to hit something other than dirt.  makes the game all the more fun.

I agree 100% that the main issue is the concentration... That is why I practice, but the noise is an issue for me. I don't want to get to deep into an add discussion either..LOL I will settle for now with the advice given. I went at lunch and picked me up some 33NRR plugs and a new set of 31NRR muffs. I'm not sure what the old ones were, but I want the max attenuation value for now.

As far as practice I have tried to shoot with a walkman on, by the 2nd night I was able to tune one the radio completely BUT there is a real difference between a constant noise and as previously mentioned "punch line" from close by jokes and etc.

Any advice on how to practice for that would be welcome.. I have been keeping the family quiet above my head during practice sessions...I might need to re-think that and get my 4 and 6 year old to do what comes naturally right above my head... That might be just the ticket...

I have always used a pair of disposable ear protectors(yellow sponge with a blue cord ) and a pair of peltor bullseye behind the head (19 db) hearing protection.Shooting high power silhouette at central jersey range with a metal overhead you need all the hearing protection you can have to avoid flinching from the next guys shot. this year i found a company called EAR GEAR IN PA. they mold the plugs in your ears and are rated 31 db.they work very well.and i an verry happy i bought them $45 dollars.       ANTHONY G

don't forget that you pick up a lot of sound with the bone behind your ear.  plugs don't protect you there.  most docs suggest you need muffs to get full protection regardless of what the rating on the plugs might be.

Ear plugs properly inserted and ear muffs.  Both of the Highest DB you can find.  Second are you looking around --you might want to try some blinders to put on your glasses.  And yes one spotter for the neighbors.  Your spotter is suppose to help you with the range commands and time and wind and all that.
Wish I could come visit good old duck gumbo-  I still have the flag
