The opposite ends of the 45 cal bullet spectrum, the 500gr Tungsten carbide core Speer African Grand Slam solid on the left and the 150gr Collar Button plinker on the right!!!
45-70 in the middle for perspective.

Mac gave me some of the AGS bullets and Deadeye gave me some of the Collar Button bullets, decided to do something with them....The AGS will load with room to spare in my 45-120 BC....Now all I need to do is find a rogue elephant in the neighborhood to test this load on!!! :roll:

Ya gotta do a penetration test with those 500 grainers for us Quick, if you can find something short of a Cape Buffalo to contain it of course. Maybe a few dozen milk jugs. :biggun:

I'll have to find some load data for that particular AGS bullet before I actually shoot those in either the 45-120 or 45-70....it's got a reeeal long bearing surface, I would expect pressures to be high with any normal 500gr load. And since it's got a tungsten carbide core, it would be much harder than lead as far as compressing, so pressures may be real high....I haven't found any load data for it, even at the Speer web site, I would imagine it's intended for use only in the 458 win mag and bigger DG rifle calibers. And at over $6 each!!! At least the brass is reloadable at $2 each.....heck, those bullets are so hard, they might even be reloadable!!!

I would think that 39.0 grains of 5744 which is the starting load for the 45-120 with a 535 grain cast bullet would be safe. 28 grains of the same powder with the same bullet is the starting load for the 45-70.. I would think either load would be safe. I don't know where a guy would look for a load for that combo.

Mac called me last night and gave me some info that will help using the 500gr hornady round nose and comparing it's bearing surface to the AGS, if they are comparable, I can use starting data for it in the 45-70. There is no published load data for a 500gr jacketed bullet for the 45-120, just lead and/or gas checked bullets of less weight.

You clould maybe find .450 black powder express data to go from. I think the nitro express data would be too heavy and you can't drop the charges much because of hangfires.

I wanna do a 45/70 to 45/120 rechamber for blackpowder. With a 32" or longer barrel.. Octagon in shape if I can afford a custom unit(thanks Fred :wink: ).

However, I'm gonna put a twist in the works and not go with an original look of the Buffalo Classic. ..but go with a thumbhole stock and scope for groundhog(my favorite game). ...I know, I know-isn't a 45/120 overkill? Yes, we dont eat them-just rid them from our pastures.

My uncle uses a Browning Highwall 1885 45/70, I use the family farm's Springfield Trapdoor 1878(original, ? on exact year). Spending quality time with a cooler of ice-tea and a relative on a hilltop splattering whistlepigs is priceless.

Here is a picture of my non conventional BC....MontyCarlo stock with mercury recoil damponer and a mannlicher forearm....I'm in the process of rechambering mine to 45-100....it's sporting a 6.5 x 20 Mil dot scope on it now... :-) I'm thinking of taking it to the prarrie dog shoot in June also just to chunk some big lead at um

I think the thumbhole would look cool on your also...

Thanks Handi...it's a hoot to shoot too!! I always get alot of looks at the range with it for some reason.. :-D I got it up over 10 pounds now...I'm thinking of hollowing the forearm out some and laying some lead in there too to add some more weight.... The smith that is going to do my ream job has been sick, busy,lazy..etc....I'm chompin at the bit to try out some of those 45-100 Black Powder loads I got loaded up....

I like that Mannlicher forend on the BC... does look more balanced that way. brb.. calling H&R for availablility :grin:, been wanting to put the BC forend back on the Maxi anyway.

Edit: Got it on order, I asked about the old style schnabel forearm but they weren't available anymore. Too bad, those are much more attractive.

I wasn't aware that H & R had a schnabel fore end... :shock: That is a shame...there are some schnabel caps available from Midway that one could possibly install...they are in the rough though and I don't know if they would fit the NEF forearm.... :? How's your rifle shootin Ian?
