Cleaning the brand new 6.5x55 barrel
« on: March 30, 2005, 03:01:04 AM »
Well, started my project of disassembling my 209x50 and putting on my tc 6.5x55 barrel.

First thing I noticed about the barrel was the red stuff coming off on my hands.

Thought at first it might be rust...but then realized it must be a cosmoline style grease.

So, went at it (gingerly) with both some Hoppes and some M Pro.

Think I got most of it off the exterior...but will hit it with some Butch's tonight before I put on scope, etc.

Any other ideas for solvents that will take this stuff off?

Also, cleaning the chamber...any tips?  I don't want to muck up a new rifle with a poor choice of tools or methods.

I'm reading lots of different posts on barrel cleaning/break in.... it's kinda interesting because some of the big names in TC stuff actually seem to say.... shoot it... don't screw around.  While other sites have regimens of 1 shot clean, 3 shots clean, 5 shots, etc.

Oh, also found on the lug an area where the blue was thin, and the metal looks a tiny bit off color. is this common?

I may get pics of the assembled rifle up tonight.

Lately Ive found good ole rubbing alcohol to be a quick work of the lovely preservatives that find their way on guns.  Took the cosmoline off my SKS just as well after I got sick of inhaling Hoppes.  Its cheap, easy to get, dont smell nor is pungent and it works great.

I cleaned it some more last night.  What I'm taking off isn't completely cosmoline.  I'm getting some surface rust.  I'm going to kind of watch it to see what's going on.  Rust is not visible to the eye... but if I soak a patch with solvent and rub the exterior of the barrel, I get  red on the patch

edit...now my friend is saying the color is probably coming from the bluing salts, not the metal itself.  He said that can go on for a long time.

Where did you get the 6.5x55?  what length....?

I'm looking for one in the Swede and also a 257 Roberts... but I want a 24-26" barrel.... heavy preferred
