Scope
« on: March 31, 2005, 11:34:04 AM »
I am thinking about putting a scope on my Ruger redhawk.  I used to have a red dot on it but I think the 44 was too much for it.  Has anybody tried these cheap scopes around $50.  BSA makes some and I think I saw a tasco around that price.  I am thinking about 2x.  Thanks for the help.

cheap scope

Cheap and 44 magnum don't mix. If you want a scope for your handgun buy a good one. You could get lucky, and get one that won't break right away but eventually it will. I would suggest an Aimpoint red dot or look for a better used scope, like the big "L".

I have an Aimpoint on my SRH. Estimated 350 rounds in the past 4 years, and I bough it used. No problems.

I'm as frugal as the next guy, but I wasted $$$ in ammo trying to zero a $50 tasco scope that the crosshairs kept moving around.  I cost myself more in the long run trying to go cheap.  That is almost $100 (scope and wasted ammo) I could have put toward a quality scope.

Learn from my mistake and keep saving until you can get a decent scope.

I've picked up Nikon 2X scopes on ebay for $100 to $120.  Never had a problem with mine (I have 3 of them).

Or I'd grab this one real quick:

Burris and Leupold

My wife has a Burris on her .44 Mag Desert Eagle, and I have a Leupold on my .454 Casull FA.  Both have served well and held their zeros.  Opposite ends of the cost spectrum and both good scopes.  Go figure.

I have an Ultra Dot and a Millet  red- dot on my 500MAG's and I have shot over 1500 rounds of heavy loaded rounds and still the red-dots hold up.

If Leupold, Nikon, or Burris are out of your price range, get a Bushnell Trophy. They are reasonably priced.

Sorry to say, but cheap red-dots or cheap scopes just don't cut it.  I have a Bushnell Trophy on my Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull and it works like a charm.

Do yourself a favor and invest in something that will work for you.  :D

My Leupold M8-2x holds true through some pretty violent rounds on my SA 44mag.

..just a recommendation.  Rather expensive one at that...

Since I started hunting with handguns in 1989 I have mounted just about every kind of handgun scope made. I have destroyed $39.00 Tascos and $300.00+ Leupolds and Nikons with equal ease. I guess I turned about $2K worth of scopes into junk before I met T’Ray from Raceland, LA. He taught me the correct way to mount scopes and that was the end of my scope killing days. The only “cheap” glass I currently have mounted is a Bushnell Trophy on a 12-inch Contender .411JDJ. It has held up to some of the heaviest .41 caliber loads I have ever shot. Everything else is a Leupold, Nikon, Redfield, T/C or Burris. You really get what you pay for with scopes for handguns. Save your pennies until you can get a quality scope for your Ruger.
Love those .41s'

I have to agree with crawfish, save and get the best you can afford.  :D

I think crawfish made two good points.
1. Buy the best you can afford.
2. Have it mounted properly.
I think proper scope mounting gets overlooked alot.  Get the rings lapped.  If you don't know how, take it to somebody who does.  When done correctly, this should prevent the rings from putting any type of bind on the scope, if they were not quite in perfect alignment with each other.  Or as others have mentioned elsewhere on this site, use the Burris signature rings with the Pos-align inserts.  Here's a link for the inserts: http://www.burrisoptics.com/rings.html  HTH! :D

If your wanting a good scope for $50 save your money and use iron sights. Save up till you can aford a Leupold. I bought 2 Burrius handgun scope and 1 of them was bad, so I`m now a Leupold or nothing man.
