You got me scared now
« on: March 31, 2005, 10:06:08 PM »
You guys are scaring the crap out of me with this posters topic.

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=59708

I'm getting a Ultra Varmint Rifle in 223 Rem. (SB2-833) 24" bull barrel.

http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/index.php?cat=4&subcat=22

This will be my first Handi rifle. But I'm expecting sub 1" groups with hand loads.
I would prefer smaller more along the lines of 1/2"-3/4".

But if this rifle shoots 2" groups at 100' and no better itÂ’s gone.

I'm only buying this rifle to shoot Pdogs and 2" at 100' is total crap for a Varmint rifle.

Please unscare me.

If you break the barrel in properly and do your part, it should do what you want. The NEF's are rarely an out of the box MOA type rifle but they can be tweaked into submission. I have been able to shoot under MOA with my old .30-30 sb2 with several different handloads.

 Good luck

You gotta remember, this isn't a $500 bolt gun, this is a $188 great-deal-for-the-money gun.  If you want half inch groups, you will most likely have to work much harder for them than you would if you spent the other $312 dollars.

Mag......I wouldn't say rarely...I've owned 3 different calibers that are sub-moa9with factory ammo0 once they had been completed cleaned & polished...and I have had only 1 that refused to go below that 1" mark at 100 yards on average...it would stay right at 1" but I couldn't get it below...besides...of all the calibers he's wanting to be sub-moa...the 223 24" bull.. stands the best chance of being that way...with some of the cheapest factory ammo.... from what everyone says here...

Warf73...like what has already been said...if you do your part...clean & polish the chamber and bore...o-ring the barrel.. make sure the scope rail screws are degreased and locktighted back on....shoot off the hinge pin...pull the trigger all the way thru...shoot the Winchester white box ammo...in all likelyhood you'll get what you want...it's not gaurenteed...but your chances are pretty good that you will...

Hope this helps UN-scare ya.

This is mine.  Took very little to get it to shoot like this.  It does not like a clean barrel though??  Ok I can accept that.  :?

I used old brass in  slow drill coated with JB's bore polish and ran a ptch down the barrel with same, about 100 strokes.  then cleaned the crap out of the entire rifle and was real diligent around the ejector.  Never a stuck case and this group was my fourth different load I worked up.

Get the 223 UV and don't look back.

It's leg bandage for dogs.     It sticks to itself and leaves NO residue.  Make for good camo.  To make it better add some cloth leafs in it to break up the outline.  You can wrap the whole gun if you like.

warf I have a ultra varmint in 223 that I took out of the box and cleaned real well and did the oring thing.

The first groups I measured after 7 shots to sight in the scope measured around moa with the winny white box 45 grain hollow points.

My gun did not like the remmington stuff.

I have put around 120 rounds through it and It is still consistantly moa with the winchester rounds.

Thanks guys. That helps.

Thats what I'm looking for.

I knew about cleaning the rifle (always do on every new/used rifle I get) really well. I planed on takeing off the weaver base and cleaning it well and lock tite the screws.

The O ring thing I've read a little bit about it. Let me see if I'm getting the just of it. You are basicly floating the barrel with the O ring correct?

Things to do:

1. Clean the day lights out of rifle inside out , outside in (this includes the ejector)

2. Remove scope base clean screws , holes and base. Reinstall base screws with lock tite.

3. Polish chamber.

4. Lap barrel.

5. Clean inside barrel like crazy again.

6. O ring the forend.

7. Have fun and shoot til my little heart is content.

That the just of it?
